Carvin TS 100 for parts
I've got a Carvin TS100 power amp that has shorted PCB traces and tube socket on one channel. I don't care to repair it. Previous owner used it as guitar amp with Line6 pod which sounded very good.
It was a stereo setup with a single 100w PT(350-0-350) and two 60w OTs(4/8/16). 4 PM EL34s, and 4 12AX7s.
My question is...What do you guys think of the 100w iron with a single 60w OT for an Express or Liverpool type build? I know that the iron was a big part of what made Ken's amps sound the way they did.
The Carvin was extremely clean on its own with almost no breakup.

If you are in need of something loud and and clean (60 watts) than that's a good way to go, if you want something that you can crank up and pull some nice output stage distortion out of through a single 12" speaker than you will have gone over board by some 25 watts!

Re: Carvin TS 100 for parts
I have to date built 9 amps, all of which are Tweeds from 5C3 up to 5F6A, so I don't have experience with non-Fender circuits which is why I'm fielding ideas.
I just looked at TS100 schematic which shows PT hitting nodes A/465 B/457 C/440 D/420.
Any suggestions on how to best use it.
Ideas on dual OTs in a bridged stereo setup...or Two independant preamp/poweramp channels.
I've not attempted channel switching before.
The Naylor sounds interesting, but I know nothing of them.
Maybe buying bigger OT iron would be a better idea, but funds are tight so I'm trying to use what I have.

I no nothing about the carvin iron but I have had sucsess running two output transformers in parallel for increased power rating. If you wanted to build a mono 100 watt amp

What kinda amp do you want. Maybe since you've built some tweeds its time for a blonde fender

Re: Carvin TS 100 for parts
I think it is time for high gain for a change.
I've been stuck on tweeds because all the old blues farts I hang with want to go back to the 60s when they were all we could afford as youngsters.
My first high gain back in '72 was a '69 Super lead. Maybe I'll go the Plexi route but I heard a clip of a Naylor dual 60 which I fell in love with but it has 5881s. Any Tag members tried one? So far I can't find a good schematic.

I built one with el34s Russian 5881s are easy enough to get

Heres a much better build by someone that knows what he is doing

Re: Carvin TS 100 for parts
Being a feature creep, I'd go stereo. Your reverb will sound GIGANTIC of you go 100% dry on one side and 100% wet on the other. Chorus and flange will be huge, too, and if you wanted a bi-phase sort of thing - 2 phasers with different settings - that would be pretty cool, too.

Has anyone ever built the Bogner Ecstacy High Gain channel from the schematic that floats around?

Re: Carvin TS 100 for parts
You got any schems or layouts on how you used dual ots. The rig I gutted was two 50w stereo channels with bridge switch for 100w mono. I'd like to use them (maybe like early JTMs) but can't find JTM schems that show dual OT wiring.cbass wrote:I no nothing about the carvin iron but I have had sucsess running two output transformers in parallel for increased power rating. Also the wet/dry or clean/ dirty stereo channels interest me but I'm not far along enough technically to design my own.
How about a cooperative group build like AX84?
Thanks...Old man running out of time and money but not passion.

If i rember correctly the turns ratio!of the transfrmers stays the same when connected in parallel . so mif your transformers are 4k with 8mandn16 ohm taps you may want to use the secondaries as 4 and 8 ohm taps to match up better with 4 el34s
