OT prices! SHORT RANT!

Post by Stevem »

So I order up a Hammond 1645 OT from AES for a guys Hot Rod Deluxe and 4 years ago it cost less than 72 bucks, now its up to 124 bucks which is over a 70% price increase in 4 years!!
Mean while all there other OTs have only gone up about 22% over that same 4 year span, this 30 watt 1645 OT now cost more than regular replacement 100 watt marshall OT.
Yea, I know it has the extra 70 volt winding and is interleaved wound, but 70% more, WTF?
When I die, I want to go like my Grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep.

Just my 2 cents, Canadians have a better standard of living than we do. They have universal health care. They're happier than Americans. People there are more likely to be paid what they're worth, like we used to do in America before we began our race to the bottom in the 1990s. Hammond trannies are made in Canada. I envy them for that.

To OP: Yeah, that and shipping costs are killing me. I recently received an order from a well known Chicago transformer manufacturer and the shipping/handling cost compared to a year and a half ago almost doubled for the same number of units. Honestly, I could almost drive there from Maryland and pick them up in person for less.
Funny though, the shipping for the other Michigan transformer company that I use remained almost the same.

yeh, you aren't the only one who's noticed. At some point Hammond just decided to really jack up its prices. Aren't they made in Canada? Does it coincide with the resurgence of the loonie? Maybe that's all there is too it, or maybe they just have a monopoly. Outside the US it's pretty much all Hammond unless you really go out of your way. I REALLY WISH SOME EU RETAILER WOULD IMPORT CLASSIC TONE. ANYONE OUT THERE?

You guys State side should try shipping in Europe  at 2€/L for gas it's to be expected I guess.

I live in Canada and a 1645 OT from Parts Connexion in Burlington ON is $143.64 US$. Plus about $20 Cdn to ship it from Ontario to BC.

So no joy here either.

I generally order in the US and pay the now-exorbitant US-Canada shipping costs. You think CONUS rates are high, you ain't seen nuthin'.

Case in point: I bought a reproduction Supro Thunderbolt PT & OT for my 5B6 build from Magnetic Components in Chicagoland. Iron was $134.86. Shipping was $49.95, or another 37% on top of the iron.

If I had bought a Hammond 290CX and 1750J (Vibrolux/Tremolux) from Parts Connexion, iron would be $150.55 US plus say another $25 or so in freight. so the total delivered would be about the same. This is not a coincidence!

Oh, and the Canadian $ is now worth only $0.90 US. If it weren't for having lived and worked in the States for 25 years and having an IRA in US$ I'd be even more upset!

Yes we have sensible health care here in Canada, but we also have a so-called justice system that coddles criminals and doesn't give s**t about the victims, uncontrolled immigration, and economic development hobbled by successive governments of politically correct bleeding heart sociologist a**h*les. Here endeth the rant.

I cant put a stocker OT in this amp, it gets played on 8 and the owner and I hate the sound of the stock OT run that hard.

David try Tip Top in Winnipeg, where i order Hammond from and i'm half hour from Hammond and Parts Connexion.

Never any stock but have always received orders in a few weeks, must go from a warehouse in Guelph->Winnipeg->Hamilton. Been a while since last order but shipping was always in line.

And for even cheaper Hammond prices, A1 Parts in Toronto, no experience with them, just recently brought to my attention.

http://www.a1parts.com/transformers/index.htm

And on that Chicago transformer Co., cheapest shipping to Canada on a $29 OT - $39.

Tip Top and A1 Parts are both cheaper and Canadian dollars.

http://www.a1parts.com/transformers/Tub ... x.htm#1750 Series

http://www.tiptopelectronics.com/home.a ... ery=1750ja

Guess it comes down to exchange rate and cost of shipping.

Was doing some shipping cost research yesterday, same small package in the Canada Post calculator, one to an address a few blocks away, one to an address in Pennsylvania, cheapest option available was one to Pennsylvania.

You could try these:
http://www.mableaudio.com/en/products-73.html
I use the 86PP 10K to 4 and 8 Ohms for push pull 6V6 Guitar Amps (I don't connect the U/L Taps). That is $18 US Dollars. Rated at 10W down to 30Hz for HiFi, can easily handle the 14 Watts produced by Pentode Mode 6V6 or the 18 Watts from a pair of EL84 for a Guitar Amp.
Never had a dud yet, ("Touch Wood").

Cheers,
Ian

P.S. Also have a pair of their MATR0048 25 Watt single Ended Output Trannies on the shelf for a 300B HIFI Amp build which I'll get around to one of these days/years whenever.
