gretsch 6162

Post by skyboltone »

I just took in a Gretsch 6162 for service. My cousin has been playing accordion through it for 20 years, and his grandmother before him since it was new in the '60s. He says it's got a loud hum that just won't go away. Cap job time. Anyway, if y'all want to see how people other than Leo were doing it back then take a look.

I just finished a restoration of my old Airline amp that I bought used in 1968. I carried it all over the pacific, and our equipment storage area got wet from time to time. The closest schematic I could find to it is a Gretsch Mod. G6152, which of course was also made by Valco. I fixed the electronics, and couldn't stop. I did have to settle for Fender style covering and grill cloth. I'll try to post pictures, but I often have trouble. Good luck with your project, I really believe that my old amp is more quiet @ idle than when I bought it.Image[/url]

Hey Sky, i have a '63 6162. Great amp, nails a lot of Zep tones perfect.

But if your 6162 is the same model as my 2 x 10", 2 input, single channel then that schemo is not gonna work and leave your tech scratching his head.

Jeff over at http://www.20wattworld.com/ has the same model as mine with pictures, and like me he could never find the correct model for his 6162 so he drew one out using his amp.

He was kind enough to share and I was able to verify his schematic. I'd give you a copy but since it isn't my work I don't feel right giving it away.

But head over to his site and if his 6162 looks like yours just email him for the schematic.

Heck, I dunno what I got here. There's not a number on it and the scheme shows reverb, conspicuously absent from this amp. This one has a pair of Jensen P10Rs and a 4 inch tweeter of some sort between them. It does use a pair of 6973s for output but has three 12AX7s for preamp duty. I haven't heard it yet as I'm just home after a long absence and am trying to throw together a workshop as time allows. All I have is the amp that I stripped out of the cabinet. When I get it sounding right I'll ship it back to my cousin to put back in it's cabinet. It's in great shape, having belonged only to him and my wife's grandmother.
