Just wondering what you've tried and what worked best for you?

Amperex in V1, smooth plate Telefunkin in V2. My V3 is a GE7025 currently and this combination seems to be working well. My quad is Sovtek, not the older Sarajevo version per se but the modern version that looks the same. I also run a Mullard GZ34.

FWIW, my cathode resistor is 65 ohms.
Most people stall out when fixing a mistake that they've made. Why?

The best is, amperex in the preamp, any german made el84's and mullard 5 notch GZ34.
The saratov el84s are good but IMO not as good as other quality el84's. I havent tried brittish el84's but those ones are nice too I've heard.

I've been running JJ's and I am using a 600vct PT so higher plate voltage them most guys building Rockets.

I have one amp sold to a guitarist in nonstop gigging bands where the tolex has been really abused but the JJ tubes keep on performing. Yesterday they said the amp sounds sweet and no problems. This Rocketeer amp is using 280-0-280.

I wouldn't mind trying some NOS and I have tried old used organ pulls plus saratov el84's but they aren't better just maybe a tad darker sounding.

Thanks Mark. I've used JJ's before and I agree they can take a beating.

I'm currently running a quad of 1968 Mullards, Miniwatt Dario 5AR4 (Made by Mullard), a Mullard in V2 and a couple of Mullard Siemens in V1 and V3. It's an all Mullard amp right now. I've been digging it like this for a while. A little dark and very squishy with the volume getting up there, but I like it around 11 O'clock where the difference between clipping and clean is at a sweet spot and the pick attack makes all the difference. I've also tried a couple of 1968 Amperex 12AX7s in there but the Mullards are what I settled on. They're real smoooooth. 8)

And +1 on the rugged nature of JJ EL84s! When they live, they can sure get their asses kicked! :o
