using electrolytic caps in parallel?

Post by joshdfrazier »

So, I found this really great vintage 5 watt epiphone tube amp. It sounds incredible, save for the 120hz hum, which i'm assuming is a filter cap issue. The cap currently used in the amp is an old paper multi-layer capacitor. there are three values inside (10,10,20@450v) all sharing the same negative lead.

I can order this exact can, but I hear they are prone to failure so I'm going to go the individual cap route. I was able to find a good deal on five 10uf 450v caps, but the 20uf caps are upwards of 25 bucks a pop...

Is it safe/possible to run two of the 10uf caps in parallel to create the value I need? will this increase the voltage rating to 900v? will it sound weird?! :roll:

Paralleling two of the 10uF 450V is fine. The voltage rating will be 450.

You can get a Vishay Sprague at Newark for $8.42. Or a Multicomp for about $2.00.
