Something New

Post by Structo »

I recently got a small settlement from a job related injury that happened over five years ago.

I've always wanted a Les Paul so I began looking around.

I never knew there were so many different models of this guitar.
Sort of like Strats, you have to decipher the codes to figure it out.

I played about a half dozen different Les Pauls and even though this one was one of the cheaper ones, (I think because it was made in 2012) it sounded and played the best to me.

Anyway, this is a LP Standard Traditional Premium in Iced Tea.
It has the '57 Classic humbuckers.

I don't believe it is weight relieved as it weighs 9-10 lbs.

Nice one! OH NOOOO! Reverse chevron! The tone leaks out from the strap button! Ask a fiddler. :)

Weigh it with your heart. Even some old ones aren't what I would call feathers.

And I noticed it's not super brown. Lucky dog.

Hehehehe, thanks guys.

Some of the newer ones have more red in the burst which I don't care much for.
And, they have more natural mahogany bodies and necks.

I like the look of the earlier LP's.

I guess I always liked the red stain on the backside, which this has.

Honestly I hear guys bitch about Gibson quality going down but I couldn't find a single things wrong with this one, except a loose top strap button. :D

And the nut action is nine feet high. Easy fix. Guitar will intonate almost perfectly.. after a fret crowning.

Oh, there's my beef. ;)

Same with the $900 or $9000 ones.

I played a bunch recently (about 10) starting at just over $2K, and up, and found that the one (just one I might add) I liked was the same model you got, and it was great. Some were real dogs. Nice color as well. I've never had a LP but will eventually (or not).

Beautiful guitar , Tom
I have a 2007 Gibby es339 with '57 classic's in it , I really like them, and they sound really nice with a Dumble clone.

Tom, that's lovely! Hopefully makes the pain and suffering from the injury really fade away.

I recently bought an 2008 Standard with locking Grovers and retrofitted with PAFs, discrete tone/volume controls and bumblebee caps. Weighs a little less than yours, but as I understand it, it's got a larger chamber. Downside is with high amp volume the guitar more easily feeds back. Yours may be more controllable, albeit a tiny bit heavier. Won't matter when you get down to playin'!

Cheers,

Greg

The nut isn't too bad but I will probably lower the slots a tiny bit.

I never liked a real low action.
My stubby fingers have trouble with bends down low.

Now I can say I own a LP!

Neener neener :D

I really don't know much about them since I was always pretty much a single coil guy,
but since I built the Dumble, it really loves the humbuckers.

I wish I had new guitar to play; it's been about seven years since I got one. But I already have about 15 that hardly ever get played, so it would be unfair to them.

FWIW, I've never got a new (or new to me) guitar that I didn't have to futz with to make it feel right: frets, relief, round-over, etc. That's part of the fun.

I learned long ago not to futz with my guitars. They always play worse when I'm done. I leave it to experts, if I can find one. It's a skill I don't want to learn either. I got too many skills as it is. Any more and I'll end up forgetting one I already know.

Anyway, way to go man. Nice axe. I had a set of those '57s on a ES337 a few years ago and I thought they sounded about as good as a humbucker ever gets!! Kind of George Thorogood like. I'm tempted to rip the stock pups (Shaller?) off my Heritage 535 and put a set of those on there. They are that good.

She's a beaut, Tom! And you deserve it, just for the mod job, as well as all the rest...

Typically action is set "bluegrass" high, as it's easier to cut the slots down rather than raise them. So a little setup work is 'de rigeur' for just about any new guitar. Unless you're one of those bluegrass players that likes it sky high. Or you're dedicated to slide playing.

Despite a lot of comments about Gibson's quality gone to blazes, I've seen a couple of new LP's that have nothing at all to complain about, within the last 2 years.
