Roy's tele, Nancy, ain't like most teles. Not really a fair comparision as far as I'm concerned. The bridge pickup was 'broken' by some accounts. Google Don Mare. There is some interesting reading. If you dig deep you'll find a forum where he bares what he thinks is the secret. I tried it...it works pretty damn well. I love doing Roy's tunes with my modded tele. It gets you 90% of the way there. That mod also works really well for Albert Collins type sounds as well. I don't like my other teles so much anymore.

Tele

I sneak ally bought a costume shop relic on ebay,it's a reddish body and man I love it,I always liked gibsons and PRS .my stratss were always quirky but this baseball twanging bat is freegin awesome!every note on that neck is playable and clear.the three way has 2 good sounds the 3rd is real muddy.I learned that that was used just for mimicking a base player back in the day.i love this guitar.the tele stands alone with a staple tone in the world of guitar sounds.mikey

There is no snarkier sounding guitar than a good Tele, bridge pickup, through a good, probably Fender, amp, cranked.
It rules.

Also, don't forget Steve Cropper-pretty good Tele player.

We've all heard it so much we dismiss it because it's hokey, BUT.....
Dig the groove the band lays down on this, and Cropper's playing is just so cool and funky:
