I bought a Mercury Magnetics TA110-W transformer from ApexJr because hey, $4 for a power transformer. I can get the unusual variety of voltages I want with some exotic combinations of Greinacher voltage doublers.
So, now I'm wondering about the best way to mount the thing. It's got pins, which I can't leave exposed outside the chassis.
I can either:
a. Put the whole thing as-is inside the chassis
b. Pry off the a-frame style bracket and have the pin side of the transformer poke through a square hole in the chassis. If I do this do I need some plastic washers to isolate the transformer from the aluminum chassis?
Opinions?

I'g go with option 2, and lay it down.

They make covers for those like this.

Yeah, it look like there are holes drilled through the PT laminations at all four corners with that in mind.

Heat shrink won't do it?

Re: how to mount this particular transformer
My first choice would be to put it inside if it fits. Second choice is to drill the holes through the bracket for a laydown mount. I would not remove the bracket. Have you ever removed a bracket? Sometimes it is the death of a transformer, other times inconsequential. You can take your chances.
Re: how to mount this particular transformer
If you're going to do that, I would suggest that you isolate the mounting bolts from the lamination iron (and the bracket) with little nylon grommets at each side of the core.NickC wrote:JazzGuitarGimp wrote:I'g go with option 2, and lay it down.

And I also vote for keeping the bracket.

The politically incorrect reply is lay her face down & mount her from the rear.
I'd keep the bracket & use an insulator.

+1 on rear mount if you are going to lay her face down because otherwise you will find that the lugs will be uncomfortably close to the chassis cut out.
