Sort of a dumb question, but is there a standard for the distance between pots? I know Ken used 1 1/8 inches for trainwrecks, but that seems a bit close for the chicken head knobs I have.
Is there something that the majority of amps use? Seems like Ampegs may have been as much as 1 1/2.
I guess it is ergonomics vs panel space. Anyone have a preference?

Re: Distance between pots.
Just so the spacing is a bit more than 2x the knob's largest radius so there is no interference. I think typical chicken heads are ~1-1/4" diameter, so that would be the minimum.
Re: Distance between pots.
I usually make the pot shaft centres 1 & 3/8" for chicken-head knobs

Fender Dual Showman: 1.125"
Trainwreck Rocket: 1.125"
All the "plexi"s I've been building with Weber's 6mX chassis: 1.5"

PECs can complicate things due to their girth, but 1.5" (center to center) is how I have my chassis punched, and I find there's ample room for anything. Alphas make things much easier.

I think my Clarostats are the same diameter as the PECs, looks to be slightly more than an inch.Blackburn wrote:PECs can complicate things due to their girth, but 1.5" (center to center) is how I have my chassis punched, and I find there's ample room for anything. Alphas make things much easier.
This is for a rack-mount project, so I might actually go 1.75 between centers to match the height difference.
I know a lot of three channel preamps squeeze three rows into a 2u rack, but that is 1.16 (1 1/6) which is cutting it close for these pots.

Re: Distance between pots.
I'm always comfortable with 1.5" for chicken head knobs.
Re: Distance between pots.
yeah - I keep adjusting the dims based on chassy size -
smaller chassy == have to cram em pots in - no harm seems fine,
I think 1 1/8 or 1 3/16 typical for me - unless I want big headed knobs!
whoops - I meant..... big - whopping - boobs

Re: Distance between pots.
I would look at a Vibrochamp - pots are pretty close on that one. The knobs almost touch each other and there are no problems.
