Options for subrack modules

Post by LeftyStrat »

I'm interested in some sort of submodule for rack mounting. There's the Paia FrakRak:

I know there are some formats to accommodate Eurorack PCBs:

The problem with the Paia system is it is only front panel, and I'm worried about shielding between modules. Also the form factor is a bit small.

I'm interested in building a modular preamp system, somewhat inspired by the Egnator M4/ Randall RM4.

I seem to remember some format 'vero' something, that Craig Anderton mentioned in EPFM.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I always thought a server drive rack setup would be a good starting point - and a severely obsolete one based on SCSI would be pretty cheap.

Craigslist, Surplus stores or eBay, in that order.

Hope this helps!

Great idea, I hadn't thought of that. If I could find an older model with 5 1/4 drives it might give me enough panel space. That's another issue I'm running into is having enough panel space for say a Dumble preamp module.

You may have to go double-wide. Or stack a couple to get double-tall - remove one top and one bottom and strap together from the outside.

My current pipe-dream 'ToneLego' project is to be house in one of these that I sourced from some surplus stuff at work - a 13" tall bastard with a card cage and some other features.

Spendy, if you buy new.

I scored two of these from Goodwill for $4 a piece.

That sliding tray is pretty slick, and it looks like you could put your triodes upright on the inside, just under the vents. (surface/rail-mount relay-style sockets).

Schroff makes a large series of modular enclosures. Not sure who carries it in the US, though......
Farnell has them but frankly I don't know if it isa US company, or European???

Thanks. Looks like Newark in the US carries this line.

Vector Electronics was the other company I was trying to remember. I think their enclosures were mentioned by Craig Anderton in EPFM.

Come to think of it, Vero and Elma also used to have a lot of this stuff. I used Elma quite extensively - about 30 years ago :-)
Don't know if it still exists, and who might be US importers....
