Holdsworth The Great
Anyone who hasn't seen this needs to. This guy really does defy us mere mortals. He IS ancient alien technology! You've been warned...

How'd you manage that??
That's pretty awesome, dude.

Re: Holdsworth The Great
Great timing - I've just finished listening to Metal Fatigue on vinyl. Holdsworth is one of a kind - and great!
Re: Holdsworth The Great
Here is one of my favorites:
In The Dead Of Night - Allan with UK
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeXSQl56no8
His solo starts around the 3 minute mark ..... and it utterly sublime!
No one plays like him. I doubt anyone can.

Re: Holdsworth The Great
Either in 90 or 91' he played this place called 19th St Brewery. So during one of the set breaks instead of hounding him about guitar stuff (like I did Mike Stern) and after I complimented his playing, I asked him how he liked the venue and mentioned that I was interested in making my own beer. So from there it kind of took off and he invited me to sit and we drank an ale and talked beer.Blackburn wrote:How'd you manage that??![]()

What was cool was that I came away thinking that he was terribly humble and for him it was kind of a pleasant change of not hearing someone say that I still have the record that was in Guitar Player magazine or asking him about chord voicings.
I've been listening to him for almost 30 yrs, damn I'm getting old. I still love Devil Take The Hindmost as much now as I did way back in the dark ages of the 80's.

Re: Holdsworth The Great
I've seen him with UK, and Bruford and on his own and it was amazing everytime.
If you dig deep on YouTube you'll find some intreviews where he says he HATES the "Geetar" (it's what he calls it). He really wanted to play a horn but parents didn't have the money for it so he got the "geetar" instead which he thinks sucks as an instrument.
He also talks about his chord structures and how he can't stand to listen to the way most of us play chords. He says the intervals are all wrong and then shows his idea of what a chord should sound like...gotta say he's right! His chords are beautiful!

In theory, theory is the same as practice. In practice it's different.

Man, that's a great story. People like Allan seem to just be more comfortable talking with people that aren't treating them like they're some entity, rather, just a regular person. Very cool you got to not only meet him, but have a drink with him too.ToneMerc wrote:Either in 90 or 91' he played this place called 19th St Brewery. +1000 for Holdsworth! Love all his works but especially Wardenclyffe Tower, Metal Fatigue, Sixteen Men of Tain. Spoken with him at several shows. Nicest guy in the world and suffers his fans with great alacrity. His playing and sonorous tone is truly amazing.

Re: Holdsworth The Great
There's a good interview/pedal demonstration video on this page: http://www.rockettpedals.com/signature- ... -od-boost/
They almost provoke him into playing blues licks. Almost.

Re: Holdsworth The Great
I saw UK back in the day at the Doctor Pepper Festival (I think) on the Pier on the West Side of NYC. They were pretty mind blowing. The only thing more amazing than Holdsworth was Bruford on the kit. What a band.
Re: Holdsworth The Great
While I never meet him there is a UK Live in Boston cd out and I'm on it, in the audience! Awesome show I must say...
