Bias pot for wreck build?

Post by Justin »

Anyone have suggestions on a halfway decent bias pot for my wreck build? I was considering using the same setup as the Komet which is a Clarostat 10 turn precision pot and thumbwheel (very nice!). However, the pair is over $50 for the two at www.newark.com and is a little more than I would like to spend at this time. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Justin,

This pot is NOT a critical part. Check out the Franchesca pic Hamer011! Ken F used a cheap trim pot both here and on the Kelly '90 amp I examined. Not to put Ken down (his amps "speak" for themselves), but Komet spends much more on "finery" than anything I've seen of Ken's.

I see what you’re saying. That’s definitely a good point. I was looking in mouser and I saw a pot very similar to the Francesca build that was under a dollar. It appears that you would have to take the chassis out of the cabinet to set the bias with this type of setup. Do you have any suggestions for a standard chassis mounted pot?

A quick question off of the subject, although the schematics were the same between Kelly and Francesca were there any differences that stood out to you in terms of choice of components or layout?

I used a standard Alpha pot through the chassis next to the power trans. Works fine. I think I used a 25k linear.

Justin,

If you check the schematic pages, I posted my original takeoff drawings which showed location and layout of the premap and power supply boards. As best I can tell, Kelly and Franchesca were built identically.
