With Iommi's illness and their age, it truly is too bad that they did not get back together with Bill Ward - as there may not be too many future opportunities to do so.
Is Iommi's tone considered part of the british rock movement? Actually, I think I already know the answer...part of the heavy metal movement...right?

Orange amps? Hot SG pickups?

Black Sabbath has gone through a lot of renditions and members over the years but I too like the original lineup.

Not often a founding member and frontman gets fired from the group which happened in 1979.

Most of you know this but Tony Iommi had a traumatic injury to his fretting hand when he was 17
and working at a sheet metal business.
Basically amputated the tips of his middle and ring finger.
He considered giving up guitar and even tried to convert to right handed playing but eventually made
some prosthetic finger tips out of plastic and was able to carry on.
Probably influenced his style more than anything else.

Interestingly, I suffered almost the same injury when I was 14.
I had been using our electric hedge trimmer to trim some bushes in our
front yard.
The cord was in the way so I reached down to move it when my fingers got into the blades.
Severed my middle finger just past the last joint and cut my ring finger halfway through.
It was a shredded mess because of the back and forth motion of the blades.
My doctor pinned the end of the middle finger back to the finger and stitched it all back together as best he could.
I had a bandage on those fingers for about two months.
This was way before micro surgery and the doc said if it started to smell bad (gangrene) he would have to remove the finger.....

It was probably close to a year before I could use those finger tips without pain.
My middle finger ended up being about 1/4" shorter, just slightly longer than the ring finger.

On 9 January 2012, it was announced that Tony Iommi had been diagnosed with early stage lymphoma.
Reportedly he has undergone chemo therapy and radiation to eradicate the cancer.
Not sure of the prognosis but I hope he pulls through.

My favorite albums were Paranoid and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath although I did like some songs from the Ozzy Osbourne band
with Randy Rhoads who died much too young.
I can only imagine what his career would have achieved if he had lived.

But old Ozzy had a pretty successful solo career as well.
The list of top guitarists that joined him on these albums was pretty extensive.
Such as Blizzard of Ozz "Crazy Train" with Randy.

And No More Tears with Zakk Wylde.
I also liked Ozzmosis "Perry Mason"

Not real crazy about Zakks over use of pinch harmonics though.

When "The Osbournes" reality show came out I watched it a few times.
Seems as if Ozzy was really out of it and sort of brain damaged from years of substance abuse.
But damn, put him on stage and hand him a microphone and he was back to the old Ozzy.

Funny, I can still remember the day I bought Sabbath Bloody Sabbath album.
My dad made a lot of trips down our hallway to yell at me i to turn that shit down!

As usual, sorry for rambling on and on and on.....

For some reason I think he used Laney amps fairly early on. Also, for some reason if I recall (probably wrong) he used SG's early but by the mid-70's was using a different double cut away (Guild?) that looked like an SG. Man, that was way too many years and beers ago to remember.... Someone will set things right.

Yeah I meant to add that, he used Laney.

And a guy I know on the ReRanch (guitar finishing) forum made an exact copy/ clone of Monkey Tony's SG.
Right down to the monkey decal.
Although it was a right handed one.

Tony and Sabbath are this guys idols.
He was able to go back stage at a show and show Tony his Monkey guitar.

Tony was so impressed that he had the guy make a lefty for him.

Totally from scratch.

UR12 wrote:I too am a huge Sabbath fan but I got to say that I am extremely unhappy with the present state of the band. Being an old drummer, Bill Ward was a big influence on my youth when I started learning my instrument of choice. I remember being mesmorized seeing them play in 1970. Just totally blown away. When they announced this year that a new album was in the works along with a tour I got very excited. Then the crap started with Bill not being able to sign the contract that was presented him. WTF, he is a founding member not some friggin hired hand. They (ozzy and friends) decided to go with his young drummer for their show in Birmingham and in Chicago. Sorry folks but that ain't Black Sabbath. Now it appears that Bill won't even be on the new album. I personally won't be spending my hard earned money on the album unless its the full real lineup and not 3/4 of the real deal. It's sad when after 40+ years that they ALL cant get together just one more time.

Rant off
As much as I love Black Sabbath and Ozzy, I have seen Sabbath 1 time in 99' and Ozzy 4 other times, I agree with you 100% Black Sabbath is not Black Sabbath with out Mr. Bill Ward. BTW This is coming from a 36 year old so I don't know buzzy tone and all but I do know Heavy Metal!!  Chad

My memory of early Sabbath are hazy at best.
Ozzy was out of it most of the time... no change there.
Tony looked like a bit of a hard case. Great guitarist.
Geezer was hard of hearing. Recently saw film of an interview with him & he could hear. Might use a hearing aid now though.
Tony seemed like a nice, genuine guy.
Great on stage together.
