FET on the main board?

Post by FuzzFaceBuilder »

Hey all,

I've been digging through the old threads and recall seeing a photo or two of a VERY old ODS with the FET on the main board. The project Iʻm working on is a copy of Eric Johnson's "starve switch" ODS #007 in a 21" chassis and I finally have room to do it.

Could someone point me in the right direction of those photos or share them if you have them handy?

Here's a preliminary layout pic of what I had in mind for the build (missing pots, etc.):

Thanks!

I don't recall seeing #007.

Do you have any pics?

What I did when I built mine was I got the amp working good before I installed the FET.

I don't think it is an issue having the FET on it's own board mounted on the sidewall.

I seem to recall a Brown Note amp that had the FET on the main board but I can't find any pics of it.

You are wise to take it slow and methodical.
These amps take a lot of hours to build, especially the first time.

Starve switch, I was never clear on the value there and I always figured it was reason he did only a few times.

I have never seen any "first gen" ODS gut shots here.

Don't have any 1st gen photos. Had early pics on a drive that went down, though. I've since been doing my homework in this thread:

BTW: 12M starve resistor!

EDIT: Jim, that 1st gen photo would be great!

I've had discussions about 004 and we were still not convinced those drawings are 100% accurate .Nevertheless, I did my spin 004 without the starve switch.

Looking back at the schems for (unconfirmed) ODS 004, something looked a bit familiar.

The handwritng in those, looks very similar to the handwriting in this.

I'm no CSI, but it looks pretty damn close.

Yes, that handwriting looks close to the person that wrote the notes for ODS 004, however there are errors in 004 notes.

Here is the thread on #004.
I think the main problem is the OD entry. The resistor values need to be switched around. Aside from that, it is a very nice sounding circuit.

Eric Johnson talks about ODS #007 at 12:20

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vl5tHnJKy9A

"The Dumble's a great amp... I still have one Dumble that I lucked into, but, I don't really use it much. It's extremely loud... I used it a little bit in the studio. I just have a head, it's a really old one that Alex made."

"They're really loud! I don't know how he got so much volume out of a 100 watt amp. It's like he built a 100 watt amp, but, it's like 200 watts. It's got four 6L6 tubes in it and you're like how loud can this be? And it'll blow away a 100 watt Marshall."

Doing some homework on the chassis...

Doing some homework on the chassis...

Through out the video below you can see #007 on the ground next to the rack. If you stop the video at 5:45 you can see the back of the ODS albeit blurry. From right to left on the back panel, (XLR socket, Dumble sticker a la Winterland, two jacks. Most likely, a TRS effects loop and the second output jack). Also of note, is a tall black Marshall style OT in the middle of the chassis.

With the power switches in the front, the space where the relay transformers is EXTREMELY close to the switches. I'm under the assumption that there'd be noise into the switches from the trafos magnetic field. Would leaving it in the same place as the photo below induce noise? Any recommendations on where I could/should put it?
