To all of the Ampgarage forum members who, directly or indirectly have assisted me in firstly inspiring me to build an Express amp, secondly pointing me in the direction of a fantastic parts supplier (RJ), offering me valuable advice and insight during my build and encouraging me and offering assistance when things went wrong.
I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart. I fell in love with the Trainwreck amps when I first saw Glen's videos on Youtube, and for some guy living down near the southern tip of Africa, never for once thought it would ever be possible to play, let alone ever own one of these amps. Well, I found your forum at the end of last year, started reading and researching all I could about these amps around May, and started my own build last month, and can proudly say that as of today, my amp is done and working perfectly. No hum, only a little hiss and most importantly, no oscillations, even with all controls dimed. I am elated! This amp is also my first scratch build, and is a fantastic companion for her older sister, my '69 Marshall JMP50, which was the first amp I ever repaired, or in fact ended up rebuilding as the case was.
In case anyone is wondering about the logo. I thought long and hard about putting one on, but at the end of the day, I felt that it was an important aesthetic characteristic, as is the dymotape labelling, of an otherwise very plain and understated amp. I redid the logo, and rounded off all the corners to differentiate it from the real Trainwreck logo. I'm satisfied that there there is no danger of this amp ever been mistaken for an original like some of the clones, and finally I have no intention of ever selling it.
LOL! Hence the VVR, which I am very impressed with how well it works!
Hallo,
do you scale the whole amp or only poweramp?
I see no master as compensation when you go down with the VVR? Isn´t there to much compression without any kind of master.

Hi Hans,
I'm scaling the whole amp. At the bottom end of the power scale, it loses some of it's character and sounds a bit generic, but from about 1/3 up on the control, it starts really starts to cook. With the volume control at around 2 o'clock, the VVR at 10-11 o'clock and playing through a 4x12 cab, I'd describe the output volume as "loud bedroom" level. In other words, very tolerable in the room itself, likely to irritate other people in the house, but not loud enough to piss off the neighbors.
