Yes they are in the ink business big time. Here is how bad it really is. I design ICs and one of the products my company sells is RFID chips. Controversial little buggers. HP approached us with an idea to put RFID chips in each ink cartridge. This idea is currently implemented in many if not all recent HP printers. The printer communicates with each ink cartridge via the RFID link. If the cartridge is not identified as an HP ink cartridge, the printer goes into low quality mode without notifying the user/owner. So if you don't give your ink money to HP, your print quality is intentionally reduced as punishment. Bastards. That is just fucking wrong. As long as we're hosing Apple can we let loose on HP and their damn printers? F**k them and their horse too. I need a recommendation for Canon or Epson from somebody although I suspect my problems of late are Mac to HP printer interface when HP designed for the PC. Still these bastards are definitely NOT in the printer or customer service business. They are in the ink business. <--- That's a period right there. Retired guys gotta wait until the end of the f**king month to print shit.

They're doing it on rechargable tools now. WTF does a drywall gun need 128 bit encription for?
So non original batteries won't work.

Wow, you'd think that kind of stealthy, subversive shit is the very definition of anti-trust! Controversial indeed. Those pricks can cut out access to competing after market consumables, and continue to hike up the prices of their own since there is no substitute. A complete set of inkjet cartridges are practically half the cost of a new printer/scanner. Like I said, I get about 6 pages of decent color out of them before they dry up between uses and then the printer informs me that I am low. The other thing I have found is there must be a complete set of cartridges in my (Canon) printer. You can't run it with just the black cartridge in it (which lasts far longer than any of the color ones). No doubt intentionally engineered that way.Cantplay wrote:They're doing it on rechargable tools now. WTF does a drywall gun need 128 bit encription for?

My canon printer has two black cartridges. Why two? Because one is for printing text (the little bitty one) and the bigger resevoir is for photos. Run out of text ink? if you do, you can't use the photo black, you are forced to buy new ink. If you go around it, you can print a photo, select plain paper, 8x11, black and white and then it will work, lots of extra steps.
Plus, everytime the printer receives a document, you get the error, out of ink with a weblink to buy. Want to print anyway? You have to cancel that, then go to the printer nad hold two keys down for 15 seconds or more to cancel the message to "unlock your printer" (which is undocumented, btw) and then go back and reprint your document again, after setting the 5 settings mentioned earlier, again. What a PAIN. So if you spent enough time trying to figure out how to unlock your printer and the work around and don't mind the hassle of all the settings, etc, then fine. Otherwise pay canon for ink.

The latest report from McAfee says that Mac viruses are on the rise.
One expert was quoted as saying that Apple is ten years behind Microsoft in security of their OS.
It seems with the added popularity of Macs and Iphones that the "Script Kiddies" are beginning to target Apple.
So the smug Mac users that like to say, "Should have bought a Mac" may be in for a sh!t storm.

OSX is a playground for virus writers.... 1. It's *nix (FreeBSD) at the core. 2. Most Mac users do not run antivirus software. 3. Popularity of the platform continues to rise.

I've pretty much always used HP simple because I'm used to them but yeah, give the printers away and charge big $$$ for the ink cartridges.
That's pretty whack to put RFID chips in them.
I think we may find those little bugs in a lot more things before the big meltdown.
