Re: I've found Bizarro TAG!
I've got an old Traynor TS-50 from the early 70's. After replacing a few scratchy pots and leaky caps, I got a really nice, stand-up "clean amp". One trick pony? Sure, but... it's a good trick.
Surprisingly, I'm glad that I didn't use it as a "Parts Amp", as I initially intended.

Personaly, me thinks that it's easier to build a nice sounding tube amp rather than SS - less time required for designing, although SS can sound nice, just my 0.02$.

I've poked around over there long enough to wonder if the SS Amp Builder revolution is around the corner. Teemuk's free ebook is a pretty cool labor of love towards advancing that ball, whether you agree with all of his premises and whether you would ever go down that road. I am just getting started on a custom Hybrid 100 watt build for a guy. It will feature a 100 watt 6550 power amp with both a tube preamp and a SS preamp. The customer plays through both a 100 watt SS amp and a Marshall SL and blends them to get his signature sound. He asked If I could combine that into one amp and it sounded like a fun project. I built him a 4 stage Jfet preamp and sent it to him to test the SS design to make sure it produced the sound and gain he wanted. The preamp passed the customer's test and I am now moving on to incoorporate it into the Hybrid 100 watter. He recorded this clip for me of the SS pre through a 100 watt SS power amp.

True confession time, eh?
I played through a Ampeg SS amp that was supposedly 100 watts.
I can't remember the model, but maybe Portaflex?
It didn't sound too bad but nothing compared to 100w tube amp.
It had a cool control panel that was etched like a PCB and then it was backlighted and glowed blue.
I kept blowing power transistors in it and finally I couldn't fix it anymore.
Not sure what I did with it now.

My favorite was a early model Acoustic Control 150 with the matching 2-12 closed back cab. Clean but when cranked it would crunch and sustain. The key was the speakers. I thought I would "upgrade" and installed 2 JBLs --- that turned it into a brittle, treble amp.

Yeah! Dana, you may have a calling across into the SS world. That was great and had a sound I've never heard from a JFET pre. Of course it's the 'just on the edge' overdrive that's really hard to get with SS.

Ha Ha, well I'm not looking into building an all SS amp but this thing should sound great through 4 6550s with a set of Marstrans. It also incoprporates A/B/Y channel switching and a effects loop. Each channel has a Gain, Vol control, TMB with seperate presence control for each channel and a PPIMV at the end. Should be a beast for sure. I've got an old Soldano SLO head cab that it will be housed in. I started this a short 3 months ago and will begin building the amp next week. I am long over due to build a 100 watterkatopan wrote:Yeah! Dana, you may have a calling across into the SS world. That was great and had a sound I've never heard from a JFET pre. I also have a project on the back burner to build a bass amp with a 300 watt SS power amp and 2 tube pre but it is on the back burner until I get the Microplex in production.
