Acoustic Control Corp, Model 401 Cabinet?

I had to rent a snake to clean out a drain, and when I took it back I dropped in the pawn shop next door. I ended up walking out with this 2x12 Acoustic cabinet.

Never heard of the 401, but a well build loaded cab I just couldn't turn down at $60.

This thing must be made out of hardwood or something, it is heavy as hell.

Anyone have any info on these. Only thing I found was two reviews on HC. Apparently it is a PA cab.

I had a pair of them in the 70s along with a pair with oval speakers. The idea was these were for lows, the ovals for mids, no tweets at all. It was my first real sound system but that band was short lived and they bought out my part.

It is listed as a PA speaker in some places, but I've seen at least one reference to it as a guitar speaker.

I plan to open it up today and see what kind of speakers are inside.

I just plugged a Matchless Lightning clone into the cab and it sounds wonderful. It really has some great bottom (especially considering my clone was never much in the low end department), and sounds as big as a 4x12. Of course I think it weighs about the same as a 4x12.

I can believe it. It reminds me of a EVM12L loaded cab, a little hifi with great bottom.

I'm having trouble finding out what speakers they were originally fitted with, so I am not sure of the handling capacity. But for $60, this is a keeper.

I just put some casters on it, at least now I can move it around the studio without developing a hernia.

Acoustic were big on the horn loaded concept.
Bass amps had the folded horn, and PA stuff was front facing horn loaded cone speakers.
Most of the PA cabs had various types of plastic or metal horn tweeters.
Not sure where a 212 without a tweeter would fit, but the typical small PAs of the day were all cone columns.

How does it sound with a bass ?
I'm thinking it may be a small bass cab.

Like I said earlier, they sold a a matching cab with 6x9" speakers for mids. It had as much highs as the altec A7 that everyone was using then.

I haven't tried it yet. I have an OT from an old Sunn 200s that I want to couple with a pair of KT88's for a nice little studio bass amp, just haven't gotten around to it yet.
