#183 build transformer question

Post by markmalin »

Hi guys,

I'm building my first #183. Just curious, what do you guys recommend for PT and OT transformers for #183 for a 100W version? I know Mercury has some designed for this amp, but maybe too spendy for me. I've used Heyboer via Allen Amps in the past - just not sure if they have the right transformers on Allen's site. I have an account with CE Distribution and they just happen to be about 8 miles from my house :) so if I can get something through them (Hammond or Fender/Marshall drop-in replacement), skipping the shipping cost would be nice.

Anyhow, would be curious to know what you've used, and what you might recommend.

Humbly,
Mark.

There's nothing too magic about #183 transformers, Magic Parts (Pacific at the time) generic stock Fender Twin PT and 100W Marshall replacement iron. I used Heyboer irons, a custom Twin PT and a Dagnall C1998 clone OT.

Thanks, ToneMerc.
Looks like the Dagnall clone OT would be 100W and have a 1.7k primary, then, similar to a Marshall Plexi output transformer?

Yes, the Dagnall C1998 and Drake 1202-132 were 100W Plexi OT's.

I'm wondering whether to order a Heyboer Twin PT from Mojo on the assumption that the heater winding is stout enough to use with EL34s. Does anyone out there think that's a bad idea, or will it handle the extra heater current without trouble?

I got a used C1998 (I think it's Chinese) from a non-vintage Marshall. The Marshall crowd doesn't speak highly of them but it was too cheap to pass up. If I ever finish the amp, hopefully I'll find out that they're wrong...

Given what I know about those you most likely will be ok. FWIW, the real #183 used a generic stock Fender Twin replacement PT.
