SLO inspired Metamorphic - build thread

Post by coolidge »

I decided to build a SLO inspired 6L6 100 watt amp for my new PRS MEQ. Now that I'm finally making some progress thought I'd start a build thread for anyone who's interested.

First up these Aiken inspired hybrid PCB/Turret boards. FR-4 .125 inch thick, plated through holes, 2oz copper. Keystone 1509 and 1540 turrets.

I'm still waiting for a few components to arrive but here's the pre-amp board largely completed. Mojo Dijon caps, PRP 1 watt audio resistors, relays vs LDR's, film caps vs electrolytics.

Here's the power supply board. I entertained DC heaters for a while then opted for elevated AC. Also here is a regulated 5vdc supply off an accessory tap for the LED's and relays. I'm using Mercury Magnetics transformers and choke, thus a full wave bridge vs full wave in the SLO.

Now that I've had me some fun building the boards I need to finish the CAD for the chassis and get that off to my CNC punchpress shop guys. I usually have Front Panel Express make separate faceplates but I think I'm going to have the chassis silk screened this time instead.

Here's my front panel mock up.

Looks bulletproof! What's the philosophy behind the 2-sided pcb plus turrets?

Wow!
stellar looking...love the looks of the film caps
I agree with martin "Looks bulletproof!"
Congrats

Those are such sweet looking boards. I can't wait to see how you dress them. Very nice.

Man, those are some sexy pcb's.

I've always enjoyed looking at SLO amps.

They look so cool they have to sound great!

Wow, that is over the top!

So what does a build like this cost?

Rough guess $1,600, building a small number of anything is expensive. Speaking of expensive anyone price 1lb of lead free solder lately holy crap!

There are pro's and con's to PCB vs Turret construction, this is largely the best of both worlds.

1. Some components are just better suited to PCB like the relays and smaller components.

2. There are many mods one can make to a SLO type amp and turrets are better suited to repeated desoldering/resoldering.

3. Turrets in a plated through hole are much more rugged than turrets swaged in bare FR-4 board. I have done them both ways. In these boards I pressed the turrets in mechanically, then soldered the bottom to the plated through holes, rock solid and they disipate heat much better during repeated soldering.

4. I found with PCB its easier to tie multiple components together. I would have had to use larger turrets in some cases and this would also make swapping components during mods more difficult.

5. I found PCB is better for component density and placement which is an issue for me because the longer the board the longer the chassis and cabinet. I'm trying to keep the cab length under 24 inches, so far so good.

6. Finally time is a factor, I have limited time for amp building and laying out and drilling a turret board like this by hand man what a pain. And no way I'd end up with a board as precision as this.

Thanks. I figured easy replacement of components was part of it. Looks fantastic too!
