For you guys with the two different speaker combo, do you ever have to mic your cabs to the PA and if you do how do you do it so that you get the blend of the two speakers?

I use two SM57s. Sometimes if recording I put another mic (higher sensitivity) a few feet back from the cab for a blend. Adds a nice ambient effect with a touch of natural reverb.

Same here, at gigs I use 2 SM57's, One straight on (GH1265), One Off Axes's (Texas Heat).

I did the 2 mike thing for awhile but I found outnour sound man was only using the mike on the swamp thang. I use an E609 on just the one speaker.

Here´s my 2 (Euro) cents:
I´ve used my 79 ODS with many speakers,
Altecs , EVs, several Celestions, JBL D120, Tone Tubbies,
Eminence Texas Heat, all of them for several years, both for gigging and
a little recording,
and every speaker does something the others can´t do, so it really is a matter of taste.
The popular ones, EV 12L and G12 65 are simply the most versatile IMHO.
I voted for the G 12 65 simply because I do not really like EVs, too heavy, too loud and too clean for my taste, although I must admit that they sound
better than they feel to me.
One speaker I haven´t tried yet is the SRO EV, hope to try the WGS clone soon.

And a damn fine speaker "The Tonker" turned out to be.

They were not 'perfect' to Robben's ears, but they WERE close enough to be usable and to give Robben a certain amount of comfort, pleasure, and satisfaction. He used them heavily, sometimes in combination with other speakers, over the next couple of years.
Robben also likes the Tonkers and considers them to be a fine speaker. We still have some in Robben's storage, and use them on occasion... sometimes on the road and often in the studio,

If you mean the AlNiCo (coffee can) SRO, I now both that and a Blackhawk now. I like the WGS Blackhawk just fine, but I don't hear the "SRO Clone" thing as much as other people seem to. Both speakers seem to lean out the bass a bit, but in other respects they sound different to me.

These quotes have been recently discussed here at TAG. Some of the guys here who have inside information stated that these are old comments made by Robbens previous tech and that these comments are not longer valid since Celestion redesigned the G12-65 a few years ago.

The link I posted suggested Robben liked them reasonably well, kept some and occasionally used them for touring and recording even after the re-issue Celestion that he prefers.

So, even if he no longer does that & prefers the Celestion, I find it significant that he thought well enough of them to use them on occasion. They're a reasonably inexpensive speaker.

With respect, 10thtx

Ev 12l has my vote Ive carried mine all over no issues what so ever.
Heavy sure but the sound is what is most important right ?

Running several different speakers here and when I fired the ev 12ls up
there was the kerrang I was missing...

Running two in open back ported D style cab.

Good enough for Ej and Srv good enough for me.

I am using my 183/102 Quinn and am quite happy with the sound these give back to me...

Which speaker best suits the D-Style?
