Sonny Landreth Live
Going to see Sonny Landreth in a couple of hours for the first time, Barns at Wolf Trap in VA. I'm really looking forward to finally seeing him perform live...also REALLY hoping he's got his Dumble
.
Re: Sonny Landreth Live
Cool!
I love Sonny's slide playing.
What do we know about the Dumble he uses?

Re: Sonny Landreth Live
Tom a few years ago in the Tonequest Report, Sonny talked about his amp in general, but mentioned his amp had 'tone controls' inside. So it's either an HRM or Bluesmaster. I tend to think it's an HRM based on the times I heard him live, up front, and close.
Re: Sonny Landreth Live
Thanks, if money was no object I would love to build one of each of the Dumble amps.
I currently have the High Plate ODS Skyliner 100w.
And my D'lite 50w which is also a high plate Skyliner.
1) Early Generation ODS
2) Low Plate Classic ODS
3) HRM ODS
4) Bluesmaster
Maybe a Carlton type Ripper amp too!

Sonny's report concerning the details of his Dumble ODS starts on page 8 afterBobW wrote:Tom a few years ago in the Tonequest Report, Sonny talked about his amp in general...
"TQR: Which Dumble do you have?"

As he refers to the "mans-amp section" of his ODS, here are some pictures of a 50W Manzamp: http://vintageamps.com/plexiboard/viewt ... 4&p=846070
Here's some information concerning the "names" (classic, skyline, bluesmaster etc.) used in the internet for most of the more common ODS circuit versions:
http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showpo ... ostcount=2
The only inaccuracy in this TGP post is AFAIK:
The transition between the
- "pre-classic" preamp with the "pre-standard" (funky OD entrance, no snubbers etc.) OD circuit: https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.ph ... 259#140259
and the
- "classic" preamp with the "standard" OD circuit: https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.ph ... 262#140262
didn't correspond with the change from the silver to the black chassis, but took place already earlier around #075: http://www.maverick-music.com/vintage-a ... eve-farris
#075 still has a silver chassis but has already been originally built with a "classic" preamp and a "standard" OD circuit, e. g. just like RF's #102 in its Miles Davis and TTYD days (before the skyline mod of #102).
Here are two other examples of those ODS amps that have already been originally built with a "classic" preamp and a "standard" OD circuit, but still in a silver chassis:

http://cdn1.gbase.com/usercontent/gear/ ... tso_so.jpg
And I've attached a pic of one of Henry Kaiser's ODS amps that has been originally built with a "classic" preamp and "standard" OD, but still in a silver chassis, too.
Cheers,
Max

Re: Sonny Landreth Live
That Kaiser amp is a great sounding one, I played it. Very low gain compared to the other ones I have heard but very sweet. It needed some volume to shine though.
Its interesting to see how most people set the tonestacks on these types.....bass and mids fairly up. Based on that it is no surprise to me why mr. Dumble updated the tonestack with one that contained more low mids.
I wonder why that amp never got updated to Skyline specs. Not really important, I suppose.
Thanks for the post Max, and good to see you back.

Re: Sonny Landreth Live
Sonny Landreth was absolutely on fire last night. Definitely the very best guitar playing I've seen, though FWIW I am a slide guy. Just incredible really.
He had his Demeter and a Twin Reverb, looked like the Twin was a backup and being used as a speaker cab. Also had some kind of attenuator or something (silver box) on top of the Demeter. Sonny was using a lot of pedals as well. I saw a Zendrive, Plimsoul, a Demeter drive pedal, at least one delay, tuner, and one or two others I wasn't familiar with, probably a compressor of some sort. Interestingly, he didn't use a pedal board, just placed them on the stage. He played three different Strats over the course of the night.
Honestly, I was kinda bummed that he didn't have the Dumble... until about two seconds into the show. He came out sounding absolutely gigantic and I was totally blown away. I'm saying a lot of really positive things about this show, but I don't think I could oversell it. The stuff he was doing was incredible.

Re: Sonny Landreth Live
Stratcat, Glad you liked the show! Sonny still amazes me everytime I get a chance to hear him. He has used the Demeter (TGA-2?) for years as his main workhorse, and no matter what he plays through, Dumble, Matchless, Twin or the Demeter, he still captures a great tone.
Last time I saw him was in Nashville at a small club on a Tuesday night (3rd and Lindsley), and was suprised how small the audience was. It allowed me to capture a few great pics of his perofrmance and gear. I talked to Sonny after the show, and what a very nice and down to earth person he is. His guitar tech also hung around and talked gear for awhile. It is refreshing to know there are still some talented and very gifted, top level performers out there who don't let it all go to their heads.
