Seperate pre amp and power amp chassis

Post by gary sanders »

On this new build I am frankensteining I will have the preamp in a seperate chassis. They will be connected by an octal plug and I wonder if I have the B+,ground, and signal in the same harness will it be ok as long as the signal wires are shielded?

if the wires are quality probably.. maybe at least until they get crimped or old. If at all possible it's best to seperate signal from high voltage power

Seperating the Preamp and power amp is not a new idea. Ampeg SVT most of the early amplifiers for slide guitar, early gibson amps. It's the same principal as rack gear. Only I assume you plan to use one PT to power both units.

Good timing. i just modified an SVT to carry the signal separate from the rest of the umbilical cord. This was prompted by the flimsy ground/screen connection breaking off at the connector.

With a smoothing capacitor in the preamp section ungrounded, i got a nasty shock. All i did was accidentally touch both enclosures at once.

So now there's a separate cable that handles both signal and ground. In other words, a 'guitar cable' :D

Needs to be short, good quality, and checked periodically.
