Marshall made the gain boost permanent, I suggested you put it on a push pull pot like on Vol 2 (pull boost) to keep the 5F6A intact, but have the extra gain if you want it. It's a good thing, will kick the amp up without getting into excess territory.

Okay, so you're referring to the resistor and capacitor on the left cathode! I got it. I was looking for a pot on the schematic, so I had no idea what you meant.

"Then I checked out a Gerald Weber video. He said the Bassman could NOT produce a clean tone, and he also said the tone stack was ineffective because of its location in the circuit."

You're cracking me up with all the GW wisdom and insights! I can hardly wait until he gets to the part with his ass and a hole in the ground!

Build the amp! Build the 59 Bassman and then, if needed, tweak it based on the various Marshall schematics. Check out the JTM 45, the 1987, the 1989, the various changes over the years--all can be made from the 59 Bassman with a few minor tweaks.

As for pedals, this is probably the most pedal friendly amp there is.

Hey G...whaz up?

There ain't nothing like my all original '64 AA864 Bassman. It's an unbeatable circuit and it does the BF clean thing rather...umm....well.

6L6's into a 4 ohm cab or sub in some JJ 6V6s to bump it up to 8 ohms. ONLY JJ's though!!

As you can see, we all have opinions on Bassman models, etc. As Duane Allman once said (I am sure he didn't invent this phrase), opinions are like assholes - everybody has one.

My favorite Bassman is the 6G6B. It has cleans to mid level crunch in the normal channel, and in the bass channel, it has the capacity to get really agressive, especially when you crank up the treble. Absolute killer tone, and not your usual vintage Fender model overall. I built one with 50 watt iron and put in a pair of KT66's, and the thing floors me. Now I just need a VVR to tame the levels, which is next on my to do list.

And yes, it can handle pedals well when it is not too crunchy, Most amps only deal with pedals when clean or clean-ish. Personally, I prefer the opposite approach. I set the amp crunchy, and then back off on the guitar volume for cleaner tones. But there are lots of ways to skin that cat.

It is a .68uF bypass cap on the cathode of V2.

The smaller the bypass cap value the less bass will be amplified.

I gutted a Silverface Bassman and turned it into a 50W AB763 kind of amplifier. Four preamp tubes and two power tubes. It has the AB763 style reverb circuit. Overall I love it and it may be my favorite amplifier to date. Great cleans, killer pedal "eater."

Good luck on your project!!

I gutted a Silverface bassman chassis and re-wired it into a two 6L6 50W single channel AB753 amplifier, solid state rectifier, with reverb, I love it!

Black Bassman is a great amp of many sounds. It's all about how hard you hit it.

Gerald Weber... hmm. In my professional life, I have met people of note who knew everything, and others who thought they knew everything. Some people get paid for reinforcing one's own opinions, or just chatting with liquor on their breath.
