Silvertone 1484

Just picked up a ST1484 Head
played it for a few minutes and it has nice cleans
little bit of breakup cranked...jumped channels and it was fairly crunchy
reverb is ok trem works fine
Original owner bought in 1964 all original tubes
Checked tubes and all seem pretty decent all above 85 on my DynaJet 12ax7's 2 Silvertone/Holland, 1 Magnovox/Yugo, 1 Rayothon/seamtop
the 2 6cg7 Silvertone Amprex/USA, 2 Silvertone 6L6GC Blk Plates
same codes test around 95... I was not going to buy it but they took 80.00
for it....I couldn't pass it up
I'm thinking about going through it and adding a 3 prong power cord, checking caps and connections and such...add some cosmetic stuff,knobs and such...maybe make a new head cab
anyone seen,heard or have one of these?
any suggestions?

Wow! $80! SOP would be a recap and 3 prong. I'd go ahead with those things.

Your power tubes look like they might be RCA. I am guessing from the appearance of the base. Those are a great score alone for what you paid. The other tubes are likely Amperex, possibly Mullard. You did real well on the tubes...and on the amp. The amp is in great cosmetic condition.

i really dont know much about the amp
owner really never used it much
'wanted it to go to a good home
have a schem and will try to check it over
it does sound decent and by the looks of the inside pretty nicely wired
as far as I know it was built the year I was conceived
its my first real point to point amp
I hope to learn from this amp
will be trying some current tubes and see what happens

I sold mine in 2003 along with the Silvertone guitar I should have kept them both.

the amp has that cool vintage vibe to it
do you know what original speakers where in the cab?

hopefully I can get the power cord installed and make sure all the caps are decent and put it in a box and use it

My guitar was black with white pickguard.

Not sure which speakers I had in that 212 cabinet. I got it from my old neighbor. He used them both in his country band for many years and I paid $350 for the pair in late 1990's and sold in 2003. I never used either one they just sat around so I decided to sell.

The 6L6 are RCA's Sears re branded them to Silvertone.

The copper looking filter caps, orange drops and the red and blue shielded wire don't look stock but if they were replaced the work was done well. There were thousands of these made and materials varied.

These came with a 2-12 cabinet. The amp would "tuck " into the back of the cab for transport.

Doing the caps and cord will tighten up the amp but IME and opinion, these amp don't mod well. They do have a great sound all their own and it's fun to experiment with pedals and high volume!

That 1484 looks to be in excellent shape!

I had a Dan Electro Centurian that had the same type piezo reverb in it. I hated it and switched it out to a one tube reverb which I liked MUCH better.

Here is a schematic for the 1484 to compare with the one that is on the internet. I had trouble reading the one I found on the net so I drew this up. PLEASE compare it carefully because it could have some error in it. Hopefully both schematics side by side might be helpful in figuring out the wiring. Look carefully at how the reverb is drawn on the one I did because I am not confidant it is correct?

I also am attaching a schematic for converting to a one tube reverb. I have NOT done this with the 1484 but did do this with two Dano amps.

Won't the 1-tube reverb work 'better' before the PI driver stage (instead of between the driver and the cathodyne)? My thinking is that if its between the driver and the cathodyne, the dry signal will be even bigger when mixing the wet signal back into it. Whereas if its before the driver (i.e.: your 'other possible insertion point'), the wet signal has more of a chance. JM2CW

Hi 10thtx, just noticed the 0.01 cap at V2 should connect to the junction of the 68K resistors, not at pin 1 of V2. Didn't check the reverb.

nice room, cool amps and axes, love the yellow wall

I recognized the 6L6's right away
first drew me to it...after they tested pretty good...I said mmmmm
and looking closer I agree the work was done well
lots of leads are twisted uniformly and/or have a small tube shielding
Wont be doing much modding to this I have a few pedals to try with it
cool you have the 2x12 cab what speakers you running are they stock?
do these run current tubes well?

for some reason I don't mind the reverb in this circuit a ...little goes a long way and the tremolo is pretty decent

they do look very similar
did the dm25 work when you got it?
did you mount the jj can inside or replace the old one all together?

this one doesn't seem real loud for 2 6L6's
its got volume just not what I expected
wondering which caps I should look at first
nothing seems to be damaged or leaking
