Some footage from the 2nd annual Central Fla. Ampfest. My son Justin (the big kid shown playing through the JCM800 clone) brought some of our amps down for the event. Great to see guys getting together to enjoy tube amps.

Having the express right after the peavey 5150 was unfair to the peavey!

It was like night and day (for me). The TW sounded goooood. I'm not sure if it was due to the peavey but now I am sold. Time to build some TWs! Damn...I see just about everyone had to get on the TW clone.

What fender guitar was that playing clean on the express? I have been thinking about getting a fender (gasp! yes I don't have one and never did).

According to Justin, (I wasn't there...working), the Wreck was very popular. I would attribute a lot of that to the reputation, and scarcity of this type of amp. A good Wreck is a blast to play. "Yvonne" is tubed with a RCA blackplate 5751 in V1, Sylvania yellow label 12AX7's in V2 & the PI, and a set of Mullard XF3 EL34's in the power section. It has a rj chassis, Pacific Trannies, Clarostat Mil Spec pots, and Mallory filter caps. Every time I play the thing, I think....man something this mean has got to blow up one of these days...It never does. Its been completely stable. Amazing. The Strat type guitar with all the 60 cycle hum is one of those high end deals of which the make eludes me. Not Suhr, or Tom Anderson...something else. I'll ask Justin what it was and get back to you.

That Strat style guitar was a Tyler. My son said it was REALLY light.....had kind of a splatter paint job on it. He said the neck was real nice on that guitar.

Big Jim,

Your amp is getting to be a legend in some circles... half the requests I get for parts are folks who want to build an amp like yours.

I also enjoyed that Orange amp... still kicking myself for not hanging on to the one I got for $100 back in 1975. Those are cathodyne phase inverter I think (somebody help me if I am wrong), maybe that is where some of that tone comes from.

I am glad folks like the way my Express sounds! I guess it all comes around full circle to Ken. What a great designer to come up with such tonefull, badass amps. I just applied what has been shared here on the forum.... I think Ken would be proud of what has followed behind him. I'm also glad that players like my son and the guys at the ampfest are enthusiastic about amps and music in general. Pretty cool.

I did some poking around about that JCM800 clone....I think the guy who built it goes by "Just Mike". I think you might be able to find him over at the Metro amp forum....
