New Member Hello & Question about Two-Rock Sterling Sig.
Hello,
I've poked around here before and finally decided to join as it seems more mature than TGP. So Hello!!
I recently saw a local guitarist playing a Two-Rock Sterling Signature and he was getting crazy good blues & Chicken picking tones.
When looking on Two-Rocks website I see that several of their amps being based off of this amp. I know they only made a limited number of these so their hard to get.
Is this amp a legit SSS clone? A poor attempt? Should I buy a better SSS clone ( Bludotone, Quinn)
Thanks for the help but info an these amps are all across the board .
Thanks,
Noah

OK, I'll give it a whirl.
The SSS amp is probably the most obscure Dumble design.
The people that know the details seem to hold on tight to the specs and build techniques.
There are very few gut pictures of these amps on the internet.
So until the few that know the details share with the world, don't hold your breath for a home built SSS.
I don't know how accurate the Sterling is or if it is a SSS amp for that matter.
I do know that Bludo and Quinn both have the goods as far as that amp is concerned.

Re: New Member Hello & Question about Two-Rock Sterling Sig.
Thanks! I have played two real SSS amps. Both were 100W from 4x 6L6GC.
The first Dumble SSS sounded 'weak' and was very bright. The great thing about this one was the silky mids that really worked well when recording the amp. This amp excels in the clean spectrum. I suspect the Two Rock is close to this amp. It lacked the post phase inverter cathode follower which, to my knowledge, is also lacking in the TR.
The other Dumble SSS was not weak sounding at all. It was alive, raunchy and organic sounding. This amp had a real nice glow to the sound like all hell was about to break loose. I really liked this one a lot.
The reverb on both amps was absolutely lush and nice sounding.
When I returned home from that visit, I built my version of the SSS. It combines the sonic qualities from both SSS amps that I met.

Jelle,
So a good TAG member such as myself should get a premium discount on one of your SSS for say $1500 then?

Well,
you got more than 4000 posts more than I do....

I hope that my post above shows that the Dumble SSS amps are very different from one another. Also, I played Brandons 'High Plains Drifter'. Amazing amp. Very different from mine and the Two Dumble SSS amps I played. Did not sing as much and was more big and clean sounding. But all have this glow to the sound.

James, how are you doing? Yes, I agree with that.
James, how are you doing? Yes, I agree with that. I aim for these sounds by SRV:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EI9TS4O5Ww4
and:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAG-kX_IlUw
as well as:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxQAEfZzpdY
and:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJutFBT8cg8
and:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4d7Wp9k ... ure=fvwrel
Also a lot of the John Mayer clean sounds can be had. But the SSS can be much grittier than that.
Re: New Member Hello & Question about Two-Rock Sterling Sig.
I think let's dance is a super reverb, no? Still though totally great sound.

Re: New Member Hello & Question about Two-Rock Sterling Sig.
The Sterling Sig is an exact repro of a 100w SSS, as well as a Custom Clean ($5,000). The only difference is that the Sterling uses NOS parts and cost about $10,000.
This is my end all SSS tone:
The notes in this clip are sooo multi dimensional.

Re: New Member Hello & Question about Two-Rock Sterling Sig.
There was another thread about the SSS . But someone said that the custom clean is a John Mayer sig which is a clone of John Mayer dumble sss . Is that correct?

Re: New Member Hello & Question about Two-Rock Sterling Sig.
Nah the Custom Clean is an exact 1/1 clone of Henry Kaiser's SSS (with Hi/Low filter's, Reverb, Fet, PI driver tube(s), available in 50w,100w, or 150w.
The John Mayer sig is like a simplified version of the clean channel of a Custom Reverb sig. (basically a skyliner ODS clean channel with fender style reverb, Bright, Mid, & Deep EQ switches), only available in 100w.
After the Limited run of the Mayer sig amps were done they released the "Classic Reverb" which is the same amp as the JMayer sig without the 8-$10,000 price tag with added FET & EQ switches.

Wow thanks for the info!! So it sounds like the guy I saw live was right the Sterling is a SSS clone.boldaslove6789 wrote:Nah the Custom Clean is an exact 1/1 clone of Henry Kaiser's SSS (with Hi/Low filter's, Reverb, Fet, PI driver tube(s), available in 50w,100w, or 150w.

He said he may sell it if I was interested... So the only difference between is and a Custom Clean ad Sterling is NOS parts? Does NOS parts really make that much of a difference?
I can see the tubes but the internal parts?
Thanks Guys!!
