Speaker for a 1-12 cab for...

Post by jaysg »

...a 40W non-HRM, 2 x 6L6 amp. Looking for the latest assessment - it sounds like Scott and Gary are settling on the G12H65 as the top choice and then...the RWB as a second choice -- is that a fair assessment? I'm more in the Strat camp, fwiw, and I'm looking for a more aggressive tone than the Carlton end of the spectrum.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. I have 3 cabinets and 2 combo's now.

2x12 partial open back with Celestion G12H80's. Very flat response to my ears. Punchy bottom end and smooth mids, the highs are nice but not too pronounced like many Celestions. Cleans are bright and articulate, OD is smooth and singing. This is my reference cabinet, I shoulda bought more when Avatar was blowing them out at $50.

1x12 closed back with Eminence Red White and Blues. A bit more mids than the Celestions, and the heighs are getting better as it breaks in. A tad muddy though, I need to really open up the presence to get the shimmer.

1x15 EVM in a closed back. This is quickly becomming my favorite cabinet. I put it together for bass but with the Dumbles it sounds excellent. Very little color, tons of bottom and nice shimmering highs.

2x12 Combo with Eminence Tonkers. These are my only 16 ohm speakers. Very aggressive and loud. A bit peaky in the low mids, but plenty of bottom and punch.

1x12 Combo with a JBL D-120 paper dome. The jury's out on this one. I suspect this old Crate cabinet is at fault for the almost muffled tone as every speaker in this cab has sounded poor. The speaker is punchy with a lot of bottom but pretty muffled in the mids. Again the cabinet

Others I've tried.

Weber 1230-55... it's listed on ebay now. Not at all right for these amps, not at all right for me. Very peaky upper mids, typical Marshall type speaker. Blech.....

Jensen C12N re-issue. This speaker sounds ok in a Fender type amp, terrible with a Dumble clean or dirty. No bottom, no mids, just tinny highs.

Weber Thames. Very pronounced mids, weak on the bottom end and highs.

Kind of a sleeper, but Sammis are great sounding speakers. I know that they're more popular among the Marshall crowd, but I really like them with my Dumbles using a Strat. With humbuckers they don't quite cut it in the Dumble (but are still awesome with the Express and 18 watt :) ).

What about tone tubbies with alnico or ceramic (or a combination of both)? these have the hemp cone.
I've used the alnico tone tubby with a marshall 18 watt and was very satisfied.
Any comments on the d-clone side?

Here's your problem. Getting exactly the right speaker the first time is only slightly better than getting the worst speaker. Unless you know it, you will spend about an equal amount of money trying to upgrade. In the first case, new speakers won't measure up. In the latter case, they will keep getting better. IMHO, the British speakers sound slightly better with Strats.

In a blatant commercial hijack, I just but my 2X12 RWB cab on the For Sale forum 5 minutes ago.

Cheers, Skip

I know what you're saying...I've been using a V30, which has some mild cone cry. I'm under the impression that the G12H65 is the preferred version of what's a pretty similar speaker. Different cone? If I buy one, there will be other places for it, so I suppose there's little risk in the proposition....note to self, stop being so cheap...and dave @ avatar needs a merry Christmas too...

Ordered & received: G12-65 8 ohm, Hellatone 30 16 ohm for my 2-12". In a half-back 1-12", the 65 sounds very neutral, which is good.

I have a Weber 1265 and it works for this amp pretty well in a 2X12 but I can't make any claims as a single. I don't even like V30's in the amps they are supposed to go in and haven't tried them in this amp.

The 1265 (anyone's) have a much larger dust cap than most guitar speakers which helps diffuse some of the highs and beamy-ness.

My HRM 1X12 combo has a Swamp Thang and it works well. I'm using 7591 power tubes and felt they needed a little extra bottom. It is very loud. One of my 1X12's has a new Scumback H55 and it sounds like it could stand on its own.

It is probably best to just buy them all on your credit card, keep the one you like and sell the rest on eBay in time to pay the bill. Float.
