Clean channel preferences...

Post by markusw »

Hi all,

which clean channel do you prefer?

* HRM
* Non-HRM
* Fender

Thanks for your help in advance! :D

I prefer non-HRM cleans, with 10uF cathode bypass caps, .047uF mid cap, 270pF treble cap. However, the OD isn't nearly as sweet as my HRM. One of these days I'll have to get creative and build in some switching options.

Thanks for your tip!

I think I will go with the non-HRM clean only channel and a separate complete HRM channel for OD. :D

What I did is built an amp with 3 channels. Since your plan has all the appropriate components you could do that too. My first channel uses Fender values, the second is an HRM and of course the 3rd is the OD. I use 2 relays for channel switching, the first switches between Fender and Dumble, the second switches between Dumble clean and OD.

Sounds great! :)
If I did the calculation correct this would be 5 12AXs. Although I'd love to do all three of them (just to hear the difference bewteen them :) ) I fear that it would be too large because I intend to put the circuit into a stompbox. OK, it will be a huge stompbox :wink: but still I think that it would be too large. Also the xfmr I'm planning to use (and order easily) http://www.musikding.de/product_info.ph ... cts_id=944 will power just 4 tubes. This xfmr is the smallest solution I could find and since there isn't too much space in the box I'd like to stick with it.

So if you had to choose ONE clean channel and ONE complete (4 stages) OD channel, which of them would you take? :wink:

5 12AX7's... no only 3. One for the Fender channel and 2 for the Dumble clean and OD channel. I like the HRM OD channel myself, but I have an Hybrid that sounds great too.

5 12AX7's... no only 3.
First I thought you build a 3 channel with both a complete HRM and a complete non-HRM. That's why I came up with 5 tubes. But actually that would then have been 5 channels.... :oops: Anyway, I think I got you now :wink:

You mean a HRM to Hybrid switch?? How many relays would that need? Suppose somebody already checked :wink:

The preamp is supposed to be run into a guitar buddies Music Man RD112 65W (via the return loop). At the moment he plays Strat and Tele.
We recently tested my Fender preamp clone with his Music Man and the sound already was pretty fine.

Basically, I like the idea of having a post-distortion tone stack. Also I read a lot of positive here about the HRM OD (and the non-HRM too obviously ;) )..
Therefore, I think I will go with the HRM for OD. Since I already have a Fender preamp clone to compare I'm leaning towards the non-HRM for clean. If the Fender sounds better with the Music Man I can still change it.

What do you guys think??

Markus

FWIW, I like the HRM clean channel with a Dumbleator running at just over parity. Much more than that is too much for the OD. Skip

One more option to consider for my build :D
Thanks for the information!
