Russian Tube radio amp finished w. pics.

Post by Dingleberry »

Hi.

Finally got some time to finish my practice amp. Old Russian bakelite case tube radio that was not working, paid 10€ for it! I disassembled it and tested the transformers and both worked. I rebuilt it from scratch using leftover parts and what I had on hand excluding the speaker. It had 6p6 power tube (burned) in it so I did sort of champ derivative (12AX7+6V6) with moonlight tone stack. Converted it to ss-rect. to get little more B+ voltage. Sounds and looks nice. Mellow but articulate cleans and creamy crunch when cranked. The 6" Weber actually sounds far better than I expected.
Not so honky that one would imagine.

That is a cool old radio.

You did a good job of salvaging parts.

Can I make one suggestion?

You may want to put some kind of cover or guard on the back to keep prying fingers away from high voltages.

If there are any children around they have a way of poking their fingers in each and every opening near them.

Check my avatar.

That sure is a nice avatar Structo;)
I've got some mahogany veneer and aluminum grill/mesh that I planned to use for the back panel. Also have to get some dummy plugs to fill those extra holes in the back of the chassis.
Probably gonna do that tomorrow if I have time.

That is a cool little restore. You going to redo the cab? At first look the transformers looked like they were junk but glad they tested out fine. Very nice T.

Drumslinger, I think I leave the cab just the way it is. Somehow I find that aged look attractive and if I redo the cab I will lose the psychosonic effect: if it looks old it MUST sound better;)
