My new JTM45 clone

Post by godi »

Hi folks,
I just completed a this new JTM45 clone. It is not a kit, I bought my parts all around (end up expensive, about $1,100.00) but I'm proud of the results, good tone :-) I still have to build the head and the speakers cabinet.
I'm planning for a 2 X12 cab with greenback Celestion.

Audio circuit = Allen Bradley NOS carbon comp resistors
Power circuit = Takman - REX 1 Watt Carbon film (2 %) tolerance from Parts Connexion
Capacitors = Mullard/Philips NOS
Capacitors Bias circuit = Sprague Premium
Choke = Mercury Magnetic USA
Transformers = Magnetic components USA
Sozo 0.047uF 400V capacitor and 100K 2 Watts kiwame resistor on Standby Switch (very silent switching)
UK Cliff input and output jack
CTS potentiometers
Larry goounding schem
Hand made Paxolin dark brown circuit board, turreted
Metro-Amp aluminium chassis (polish)
Weber 25K bias Potentiometer
Ceriatone plexi front panel - Hand made rear plexi panel
v1 = Mullard Blackburn factory UK 12AX7 NOS
v2 & v3 = Mullard 12AX7 RI
v4 & v5 = Valve Art KT66
v6 = GZ34 Blackburn factory UK Mullard NOS (label G.E.B.)

I had a chance yesterday to try it with a 4 X 12 Marshall close cabinet with greenback and in a Avatar 2 X 12 also with Celestion speakers, awesome vintage tone in both cab.

I'm not a amp technician or amp guru, just a passionate hobbyist and to my big surprise the amp run without any issues right from the first start-up.

The only draw back I can see is the amp need to be crank high (over 5-6 on the volume) to deliver the nice Marshall crunch we expect. Bellow five, it's very clean (a la Fender).
Cheers, Jean

Nice! :D
Mustards as well.

You may consider the Lar/Mar master volume to allow more crunch at lower volumes.

How is the bias pot secured to the chassis?
Looks like a bracket there but how is the bottom of the pot secured to it?
Soldered?

I take it you are in Canada? 120vac?

Bias pot

Post by godi »

Thank for the comments. Yes the pot is solder to the custom made brass plate. I will post audio clip when I will have a decent speakers cab, right now I'm running the amp into a 2 X 12 Jensen Alnico P12Q, not a very good match.

Thank again, Jean

Sweet job on the rosewood tele. :D
I always admired George's.

Some day I may have to build one.

Jean-
That is beautiful work-tres beau!
That Tele through that amp, cranked, I bet is a killer sound.
For what it's worth, don't waste a lot of time trying to tame the volume
level in a Marshall 45 watt clone. They sound good cranked. That's how
they are meant to be played. Master volumes are useful (I have a
PPIMV on mine), but they are not bedroom, or even living room level amps.
They are meant to be on stage, flat out. That's where mine sounds best.
For house playing, I use a smaller amp with 4x6V6s.
Good luck.
Beautiful work.

Ooh, very nice! How does the brass plate work and how is it fixed to the chassis?

What's "Larry's grounding scheme"?

Undoubtedly, the red wiring on the tone controls sounds much better than standard Marshall pink!

Now that you've completed such a nice job, you can now proceed to tear it up and clutter it with a PPIMV and other mods!

Good luck!
