Using 2 of 4 Rocket Tubes

Post by 71model »

Hi, I have a Rocket clone by Two Rock. It's a Two Rock Custom, not the ruby. Has 4 EL84's. I was wondering since it's sooooo LOUD!, if you can pull 2 of the power tubes out? If so, which ones can you do this with. I have an old Peavey amp with 4 6L6 that I pull 2 out and it worked fine.
Thanks for your input

There is another thread running right now that will give you most of this info... Bottom line is that if you do what is needed to run the amp on two tubes, it can still be really stinking loud.

There are a few things you can do but I'd suggest following this thread and the other associated threads you'll find linked from it. That will give you the technology to make the two tube Rocket and some additional options to consider

You will get more volume control using an attenuator than using only 2 tubes. That is my opinion.

I tend to agree... My Rocket builds seem to do well with an attenuator.

I just finished a 4x6V6 Reverb Rocket Build w/ VVR. The VVR is regulating the Plates, Screens, Reverb Driver and PI. V1 and V2 are left unregulated.

It seems to work well, but I haven't done too much with it yet because I didn't use a sufficient heat sink on the mosfet. I thought one of those ceramic pads would be enough, but when I had the VVR dialed back to minimum voltage for a few minutes, the mosfet started smoking!

I was a little surprised to find that it still works, but I'm not exercising the VVR much until I can get it mounted to a bigger heatsink.

Thanks for the kind replys. I'll be checking the link out for sure, I appreciate the advice.
I have a mini mass, so I'll have to give atten a try.

I don't even know the watts of an EL84, I just know they're more powerful than they looked(LoL) :)
