PT Minimum current rating for a 4 6L6 build

Post by fp2000 »

Can someone tell me what the minimum current rating for a PT is when you are using 4 6L6 power tubes? I know that a Twin PT is rated for about 450mA. But is that really the minimum needed for a 88 watt build?
Please let me know
Thanks all

I think it's safe to say that the rating should be twice the intended power of the amp -- at a minimum. Thus, if a Twin will have about 440V on the plates and is suspposed to feed a 100W power section, the power handling capability of the transformer should be 200W. The current rating is the power rating divided by voltage and thus: I = 200/440 = .454A = 454 mA. That is where the number you quoted comes from.

If you want specific numbers, you can go with lower than 100W for 6L6s, and you MUST know what voltage the transformer will be putting on the tubes' plates to answer the question you ask.

Hope this helps! Cheers,

Gil

Thanks Gil. I will go from the assumption that you made. I guess I should have asked the real question, is if 300 mA would be enough since that I the transformer that I have in hand. That would give me about 130watts.
Thanks
