I have often wondered if the magnets get bumped out of line when shipped.
I guess I should have paid closer attention to the two 12L's I bought.
Each were from a different vendor.
I suppose I would notice something by now if they were damaged.
That is one beefy speaker for sure.
Haven't really looked forward to moving that 2 x 12 since I put those in.
Before that I had two Tonkerlites, hardly weighed anything with those.

As far as I know, the magnets on the JBL (pronounces Jay-Bull) don't move like the EV.

Besides I know how this one got damaged. I loaned it to a friend, who thought it was a good idea to push the cone in and out with one hand to see if it scratched. It didn't before he pushed it, it did after and not a note was played through it.

I have next to 0 confidence in JBL's. This one was from a Twin Reverb I had in the last 60's. It's been reconed at least 3 times that I can remember. The big voice coil is very unstable and it would develop voice coil rubs very easily.

I must prefer the EVM, better tone and they last almost forever. I'm quite surprised that these 2 are shot.

Problem with this one is a voice coil rub, do you think a spider will fix that?
I have a EVM12 that had a similar problem.

I was able to loosen the screws holding the magnet and move the magnet a little bit by gently hammering a couple of times after which I tightened the screws.
AT least it has screws - In the '80s one of my favorite speakers for guitar was a Yamaha 15" like they used in the G100-115 amps. The magnet on that speaker was held in place with glue only, so if you dropped them wrong they shifted.

Just got done doing this dance with a Carvin PS10 Bass speaker. Held together with glue only, shifted and pinched the voice coil. Can't find a proper re-cone kit, voice coil is in good shape, but doubt if I could clean it well enough to re-use, without damaging it.

New speaker was only$60.00 shipped. But it will be a glued only model also.

I did manage to reglue a cerwin vega 18" Sub woofer magnet I had come apart a while back and get it up and running for $3 worth of epoxy. I wish someone would have told me you can have those magnets discharged and re-charged before I tried that. Talk about a fight................ :(

I still have special order JBL D110-F for a 1970 super reverb that have no problems, but it may be because they are 10s w/ less paper and maybe more stable than 12s), and used in a 40W amp. The real problem w/ this amp is you can't lift it using the handle, at 88lbs, it will pull the top off of the cabinet.
As posted earlier by bluesfendermanblues it is possible to re-position a magnet held by screws.

The 12's seem especally unstable. The big voice coil and flat cone seem to be ok on clean tones, but overdrive tones tend to make the voice coil rub and destroy it over a fairly short time.

BTW, o that 88 lbs, about 40 of them are in the chassis, directly atahed to the top so it won't pull off. But I hear you, in the 70s' I used to live on a 3rd floor walkup and had a Twin with JBLs. Torture getting that thing back home after a gig.

Can provide recone kits

Post by crawdadz »

I can provide recone kits for most of the speakers mentioned. I can make it very affordable as well, as I have Zero overhead. If interested email at crawdadspeakers@comcast.net The process is not that hard if you have built models/electronic kits etc. The kits are not drop in but are very high quality. Attached is a representative kit.

Sorry, I didn't know the picture would be so obnoxious. (Removed Attachment)

I seriously just like to provide people who want to give reconing a try a chance to do it.

Nothing to lose if a speaker is blown. :-)
