Relay and OD mode - relay "on" or "off"?

Post by mlp-mx6 »

How do you wire the OD relay? Is it in clean mode with the relay energized, or in OD mode with the relay energized?

For those that do clean energized, did you find that the OD is quieter?
Wife: How many amps do you need?
Me: Just one more...

I like to have the OD on as a default for 2 reasons:
1. If the relay or relay supply fails I still have OD
2. The footswitch that antique sells is light on when normally open so I don't have to rewire that switch.

If you use adequate filtering for your relay supply and pay attention to your wire routing there should be no extra noise either way. Face it, the OD section is prone to some noise (background hiss) because of it's gain.

One of my first attempts at a Dumble used the Weber relay kit which was powered by the heaters. I found this one very noisy when the relay was on so I set it for OD normally on. Once I built my own relay supply and used a separate supply there was no issue, so I stick to clean normally on.

I remember using those Weber relays.. Noisy suckers.. No ground potential when they were energized.. Good idea bad design..

If I recall the Ceriatone OTS amps have the OD relay on when in clean mode.

Seems I tried that quite a while ago and didn't do it right so I went back to Brown Note's layout.

I'm probably going to make some new relay boards as the printed circuit one I have has been modded so many times that it is not that great anymore.
It works, just doesn't look that good anymore. If I keep the chassis in the head cab, it's out of sight/ out of mind.
