Single Ended D-Lite

Post by Chappy »

Has anyone ever tried making a SE D***** clone? I would like to build a lower wattage amp with versatility for home use only (around 5W).

My initial plan was to build P1 exteme, but I believe that the D***** preamp will allow more versatility. My only concern is that I can't incorporate the negative feedback loop. I'm concerned that without the feedback loop, I won't be able to get a nice clean sound.

Any thoughts/practical experience greatly appreciated.

I tried it early on, then decided that I had a better use for the single ended amp and changed it to a Hi-Octane.

In general it didn't give that classic Dumble tone. Dumble's get their tone from an overdriven pre and clean power amp. The dirty power amp had a completley different charactor, more gritty and crunchy like an AC/DC tone, rather than a smooth OD like Robbin Ford.

After awhile I sold that amp. I just got bored with it.

Adding to what Bob said, there's really no need to build a 5 watt Dumble for home use. You don't need to crank it to get great tone. (Although I really do love the sound of a cranked Dumble. ) Have a listen to this clip. It was recorded by my friend Greg at conversation level, about the same volume as listening to a TV. The amp uses a 22 watt PP output.

Thanks for the reply. Your statement is exactly what i was afraid of. It sounds like I should just build a high gain SE amp, and then build a separate Dumble clone. Probably will be less trouble in the end.

What is the approximate B1 voltage on your 6V6 Dlite clone? Im guessing that 475V (as per the hybrid A schematic) would probably result in a short life expectancy for the tubes.

Thanks

Not quite that high. I like using a 320-0-320/200mA PT. Working B+1 is about 415VDC which is well below JJ's specs for 6V6 pentode operation (500VDC).

Cool. How about old 6V6's? I have an assortment of old NOS Sylvania & RCA 6V6's. I also have some slightly used Sylvania & Tung Sol Jan 6V6 types? The GE spec sheet says 315V for 6V6GT, and the RCA says 350V for 6V6GTA. Will 400+ volts seriously effect the life of these tubes, or can they take it just as well as the JJ's?

I have an assortment of used good quality PT's. I could build this with a 335-0-335/175 or drop it down with a 250-0-250/175ma.

Sorry for all the nube questions, but I don't want to overly abuse my power tubes if it isn't necessary

Thanks
