Jeff Beck's Pump w/ Music Man iron amp
After the last clip posted people say I had a little Jeff Beck thing there so thought I would learn one.. Amp is Music man high plate Non HRM..Going through the FET w/ D-Lator got me a little closer.. Guitar is of coarse the JB Strat I pretty much had the Dual Lace Sensors running.. I hope you all like it.. Enjoy.. Finially getting the hang of Cubase thing..Still mixing with headphones sucks..Hard to get the effects right.. Have a good Weekend!!

Wow! That was GREAT. Really Liked the tone and the great playing.
Beck's style is a hard one to nail exact as he has so much going on at the one time. The wang bar bends are very difficult to keep in perfect tune. I've been watching vids lately ( studying his setup) and came to the conclusion that there a boost circuit replacing the bottom tone control on his strat. He rides that pot (in some songs) going from clean to scream also has Steve Prior doing switching of preamp tones whilst foldback guy handles time based fxs. Very complex routing on his live system. Great job nailing the tune and great tone on your amp. Wish I could build one that sounded as good.

Wow too. Really nice, both sound and playing.
Yeah that vibro-bar work was excellent.

Loved it, Tony, really impressive!

Tony, great playing.
I just saw Jeff play on Friday night! Awsome show and I will second the thought that he has someone swtcihing while he plays. I don't know about the boost circut. We got to get up to the stage after the show. Saw a klon centur and a snarling dog wha and about 6 loops on the pedal board, then they covered it.
Amps he was playing two little fender tweeds which siad "pro junior" on the back, these were on top two marsall 4 -12s which weren't used. A marsall vintage modern was next to the tweeds but running to 1 4-12 behind the others facing the back stage. Mic on that one and on one of the tweeds. Great tone.
Jeff played 90 mins with the first guitar, never tuned!

Thanks for the update on his current tourin rig. I watched an interview where he said he was going for smaller amps on this tour.
Here's one example of tone pot play at 0.17 on this clip, seems the pot has more effect on the drive than the tone ( to my ears anyway).

Hi Tony. Enjoyed your 70's clip and this one was no disappointment either!! Lovely tone and playing. Ive not built any FET circuits into any of my amps and I am getting the feeling I might be missing out on something! Are you basically just trying to get a little extra boost going into an otherwise high headroom high plate input? Thanks again for for your advise...I am enjoying the results
Doc.
Re: Jeff Beck's Pump w/ Music Man iron amp
THANK'S EVERYONE!!..
I thought it really cool to put the amp in a different arena, see how it sounds and performs.. This place to me is about TONE!! not playing or showing off.. After seeing the Jeff's Ronnie Scotts show inspired(which I highly recommend) I wondered what it would sound and perform like in Jeff's world..(NOT that I play anything like him) but just to get an idea..This way we all come away with 2 things how the amp sounds and weather it takes to the transition well into the various styles sincerely....Gilmore would be another!!..hummm
Yeah I tried both with the Fet and without and being Jeff usually drives the front end with pedals gave it that transistor type texture/gain which was real apparent on the Guitar Shop CD when he dabbled into the techno stuff for a while..So here it just kind of works..
The qualities I thought that worked and didn't work were
Ability to sustain at will..always a +
The low end flutter is cool
The response to the fingers (very little lost in the translation)
The neck pickup I thought sounded a bit dark though it came off ok nothing like the Marshall though so I kinda missed that and didn't hang there for long..
Dumbles are more known for the low end and fat midrange unlike the Marshalls known for there soaring high end and ability to grab fretted harmonics more easily for me.. This to me is a huge part of Jeff's tone as he does not like much low end in his tone (turns the bass control off)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wg-9WrMxf8
For me and the way I play the Dumbles seem to do better when played more slowly exploiting the tone and sustain than about speed which the notes kind of smear together.. Marshalls have a kind of faster percussive attack so playing faster on them kinda works better for me..( maybe I should work more on my chops)
These are kind of the things that struck me as I was wanking through the clip.. Hope it helps!!
( Steve also mentions this in the YT clip posted above)
Eric..
Thanks for the rundown review of Jeff's setup very cool..
Also FWIW I bought the Beck in 98 played the shit out of it for 10 years in a pretty busy band and still to this day have yet to turn the neck..It's pretty much the same as the day I bought it.. something to be said for the big neck..Also if you set up the bar so when you pull up on it the d srting should raise a whole step (B string a half step) use 3 springs vertical and slightly back off on the screw on the bass side since there is more back pressure there (claw at an angle) you can do the Jeff style bends in both directions.. It stays in tune nicely also with the help of the LCR roller nut and the FAT neck doesn't hurt either.. Thanks again all and hope it helps..Wife's gone and looking at a backing at Cause we ended as lovers..Where's the BEER!!

FWIW .. My JB Strat has a TBX tone control for the the bridge sensors.. It has has a notch of center which is considered flat no cut.. if you roll it up it rolls of the low's boosts the highs( once again Jeff doesn't like much bass) the other direction does the opposite as you get that quacky thing Jeff likes..It's a passive circuit unlike the Eric Clapton Model / Buddy Guy which is active.. When Jeff later switched out of the sensors shortly after the Stevie Ray Tour Surf Green he lost the TBX and went more to the conventional tone control.. You can go on Fender's site and look up the 2 layout's wiring variations neither were active as far as I know.. I have one of my newer Strats wired like his most recent and like it very much..Since then Jeff may have gone active that I don't know..and came to the conclusion that there a boost circuit replacing the bottom tone control on his strat.
