Has anyone done a Fender Hot Rod conversion?

Post by Bob-I »

Since I have several really good sounding D style amps I pretty much stopped building and spend more time playing. This week a friend of mine approached me about converting one of his amps. He has a Blues Deluxe and a Hot Rod Deluxe both in need of work on the PCB.

I've worked on several Hot Rod deluxes but no Blues Deluxes. I thing the Hot Rod chassis and iron would work ok.

Before I go drawing this up I wanted to see if anyone has already done this conversion and wants to share the results.

Thx in advance.

Hi Bob,

The closest to a description of a Fender Blues Deluxe/Deville converison, is probably Henry's (Heisthl) conversion of Peavey Delta Blues amps:

https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=2370

https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=3299

Both fender (Devile/Deluxe and Hotrod Deville/Deluxe) and Peavey (Classic and Delta Blues) amps look like perfect conversion platform.

I have a guitar friend who would me to build him an amp, but cannot afford a complete new build, guess converting one of the above amps would suit his financials better. Besides my soldering time, all you need besides a suitable amp is mallory caps, resistors and fitting a new board instead of the pcb. - cost probably around 100 USD.

Thx, I agree about the cost. I've done a few conversions and they sound great although adding tubes and upgraded speaker it was more like $400, still a lot less than scratch.

Ok, thanks....thought Jim would be presenting some mod ideas, but it seems to be his core business. No problem.

PM`d Bob on a quasi SSS on a blues deluxe, or deville, just add a CATH follower at unused triode, and add the LFB loops, i don`t like first one on this amp, just my opinion....it sounds really good, and the few customers i`ve done it for liked it..

peace, jim

Thx Jim, I got the PM. I'll run it by my friend but I think the reason he wants to do this transplant is that the PCB is f**ked. The local repair shop wouldn't touch it.

VVT Amps makes a preamp based on the HRM circuit that's buffered and inserts right into the effects loop of these amps so you get clean channel with boost and OD with boost..By using the loop in the Deluxes and Devilles you use the power amp section as well as the amps reverb..

Something to look into if you cant mod it

Here is there Demo

Tony, regarding your preamp and comparing it to the Ethos, it's only $150.00 more. And the Ethos is a solid state emulator with no EFX buffer. A lot of bang for the buck!

Is the buffer solid state or tube?

Have a good weekend.

The X-Preamp is 100% tube driven and has either buffered or un- buffered sends (w/level controls)..

Jim
During my tenure at VVT I did help with much of the design and voicing concepts with the X-Model (Powered version) The Preamp was just an extension of that model..Other than the addition of the Buffered loop (which took the place of the PI tube) it is AFAIK identical to that of the powered version..
I have not personally ever had the chance to play one of your amps, but I have heard good things about them and am sure they sound wonderful.. :D

All The Best!!
