head cab

Post by dcribbs1412 »

Took a break from builds to make a head cab for my 124 style low plate
mahogany with alder front...
Hoping to get a few more head cabs and speaker cabs in the works soon

Looks very nice! One thing though, that doesn't look like mahogany to me... Walnut, maybe?

Beautiful. What type of finish did you use?

Thanks guys

TM after looking around my shop and seeing 4 or 5 builds without cabs
I thought I need to learn some wood working skills.
I had help on this one...

your right Martin it does look a little like walnut
my other mahogany cab seems more reddish...

LeftyStrat
finish is a sprayed on clear seal...really light
not sure what its called I can find out.

Wow that looks really nice, that's exactly how I'm hoping to do the cabinet for my current build with the half-blind dovetails and front panel. Do you have any pics of the building process? I've got lots of walnut but I'm wary mess it up.

Thanks, ER

Beautifully done!

I don't think it's mahoganey either. I've done quite a bit of woodworking with mahoganey. I also would vote for a type of light walnut, or even ash or hickory?

Excellent job. I love the cab.

With respect, 10thtx

Looks great!

I would love to get into making cabs.

You know, a nice piece of flamed maple would look good as the front piece on that.

Thanks guys
ER sorry no pics of build
I will say I had help on this one...my friend has a cool wood shop.
the dovetail machine is an industrial unit...has a 10HP motor
I agree about the wood it does kinda look like walnut in pics.
this is was a 1" thick 11" wide and 8 ft long board
only wood he had wide enough was "mahogany"...it was at the bottom of a pallet. He seems to know his wood and is particular about it.
Has some maple but smaller widths.
Was thinking of putting holes in the front piece (alder) for heat and covering it with black cloth...
I might have him talked into a trade
he is an old-time rocker from the 60's and is interested in a Fender Deluxe
type sound.I have a 1x12 Sweet Spot build that might just fit the bill.
...so I showed him plans for 4 more head cabs and a ported 1x12
Will see what happens...I 'm hoping to learn some good woodworking skills and make some decent cabs in the process.

Except for the autumn wood, this looks closed-grained. Walnut and mahogany are open-grained all over and would need filling before the finish was shot. It looks a bit like cherry but that doesn't have any open grain (see attached). Drag your fingernail backwards (rasgueado) across the grain somewhere where it isn't finished. If it is smooth, it's not mahogany. sh
