Thoughts on Marshall bright caps?

Post by randalp3000 »

Just finished a low watt JMP type amp with the .005 bright cap on the volume control. This seams a bit high to me. https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.ph ... 745#333745

Do any yous guys have favorite values for the bright channel?

thanks

Randal

One of the resident plexi/Page master builders here sent me this...
“For the Page tones one of the tricks is having that 5000pF bright cap over the Bright channel volume. “

So if it's the Page tone you're going for, you got it!
In theory, theory is the same as practice. In practice it's different.

Here's were you need a capacitor substitution box to try out different caps.

I'm inclined to say no more then 500pf.

I've seen it from 100pf, 500pf, .002, and .005?

In my JTM 45, 500 was too bright for me too, I ended up with 100 if I remember correctly.

thanks for the reply's guys.

the .005 bypasses soo much it's hard to control and mix the 2 volumes. I like how it sounds but it's very hard to dial it in. I may monkey around with it some more when I get home.

BTW this amp rips ass

The 5kp is the awesomes on a straight circuit though.

The 500 only makes it sizzle more. The 5k makes it go! As you can imagine it's nearly full volume before 50% rotation though. :)

I think I have mostly 4k7p and 2k2p on my amps. Much smaller on the cascaded ones gain controls. 100/250/500..

The way to go, IMHO, is to use a push-pull pot for switchable 100pf/5nf. This works well on all the plexi circuits and all volume settings

I was just about to suggest this Roe and would be the best solution.

that's a great idea. I was hoping to avoid any switches but I might have to throw one in.
so far keeping it stock at .005 for this weekend.

Use a 1MA push pull CTS pot for your switching.

i used the push pull pot in my last build. Worth it! gives you options without drilling holes.

i dont like the torque of the pp pots though, but worth the tradeoff!
