2204 volume goes up and down?!?!?!

Post by Curranproducer »

ok, I have a home brew 2204 I am using in my studio right now and it is doing a weird thing. the volume of the amp is going up and down at seemingly random times. I can literally see the wave form I am recording shrink down and then come back in a few seconds. What the heck could this be? are my filter caps going bad? they are barely 6 months old JJ's and the tubes are new TAD power tubes with about 20 hours on them right now. the preamp tubes are all pretty old though. at least 3 or 4 years. this is a scrappy pieces parts 2204 I built that has been sounding awesome live

still having some MAJOR volume drops, I did smack the amp and it jumped back in volume, but there is no crackling like a cold solder joint or anything...............

Intermittent connection. Smacked it and it changed? Confirmed. Bad speaker cable?

Monitor the heater and V+ voltages to see if they are steady!

could it be the caps? specifically the 50uf/50uf's in there? I retubed it last week and have been using it in the studio, the issue is a bit less but still definitely there at random. I removed the low input and make it a solo boost foot switch jack instead. could it be a crummy input jack itself? I will check my voltages while it is running. see if there is something there? would the voltages decrease them?
