New Build - 2204 with PPIMV in Express chassis

Post by amplifiednation »

Here's a build that is pretty close to power up. I still have to run the PPIMV cables, but that is about it!!

I used an original Drake PT/OT/Choke set from a late 70's JMP 2204 that was supposed to be a little light on the plates...and those reportedly sounded the best!!

JJ Cans, Pihers, a mix of caps...all wrapped up in an Allyn Express chassis.

I decided to pull the bias pot off the board...and i'll probably run some test points to the back panel too.

I got a bunch of nice Takman resistors and ended up using eyelets because I couldn't find my bag of turrets..which I found once i finished the eyelet board.

Ah well, I think it's looking pretty good. I would have liked to clean up the transformer wire runs...but not many options over there. I may throw a Plexi switch in the amp, but I want to see if it's breathing first!!

Hopefully I'll have a good update in a few days....and hopefully I decoded the Drake transfomer wiring correctly!!

Thanks
Taylor

Most of it was on your suggestion my man! And I believe you helped me get this transformer set last summer off the Metro board!

All done!! She fired up nicely. Seemed a bit bright at first through my pine test cab, but once plugged into my 4ohm 2 x EV12 cabinet, this amp RIPS!!!

I decided against the PPIMV at the last minute and just got it working. I did sheild the leads from the board though which cut down on a little bit of hiss.

I changed the bias feed resistor to a 180k to get in the range I needed to. IIRC I am just over 400 on the plates...which I believe is low for this amp, but what I was expecting with these transformers.

It sounds killer!!

I'm going to play it for a few days to get the feel and then I might try some of the Miles mods.

Really cool getting this into a 17" chassis!

Any recommendations for cleaning flux? I tried 70% Ethyl alcohol but it didn't really do much.

Youtube Video...TONS of gain on tap...this was extremely loud...

enjoy...

These knobs are way too big, but they are all I have for now!

Kick ass!! When O get a minute O will hit the tube and check it out.

Good job. It looks great in there! That chassis serves the amp pretty well I guess.

Acetone, from the hardware store not your mom/girlfriend/wife. I just go at it with a few q-tips.

Taylor, your insides are looking as nice as your outsides, congrats.

Thanks guys! I've wanted one of these for awhile. The smaller footprint is cool. I will get the acetone tomorrow and see if I can clean it up.
