Classic 2-channel Fender Reverb models - which input?

Post by dmoose5835 »

Idly thinking about the classic Fender *whatever* Reverb models and that 3.3Meg series resistor where the 'Normal'
and 'Vibrato' channels are summed. I get the impression that guitarists favor the 'Vibrato' input even if they never use the reverb or vibe functions. Is that because that resistor adds attenuation such that the 'Vibrato' channel needs to be turned up further, adding clipping and thus a richer tone?
Probably an old debate, but it might be part of the magic for these classic circuits. Maybe?

That 3.3M has nothing to do with mixing the vibrato and normal channels. Fender uses two 220Ks to mix the channels together.

That 3.3M is only used in the VIB channel. It is used to knock down the big dry signal so it can be mixed with the weak wet signal to provide a pleasant dry+wet reverb signal. But this combined signal is too small to drive the PI so an additional gain stage (V4B) is used to boost the signal before sending to the PI. That additional gain stage adds a bit of flavor to the VIB channel tone and that's why most prefer the VIB channel even without reverb being turned on.

It's better to have a schematic in front of you while idly thinking.

everyone uses the vibrato/reverb channel, it sounds more compressed with more chime and overtones. but it is noisy and the bass is loose
