Bassman AA165

Post by dreric »

I did a cap job for a friends 1965 Bassman AA165. In my research I discovered that the AA165 is rare compared to the AB165 and that a lot of AB have AA tube charts. Not realty sure which one this is? The filters were blown and the caps on the board needed to be replaced also. It came out very well, sounded awesome when it left.

Here's some photos:

It's actually the AB165 Bassman, the AA165 has a different bias supply and no feedback loop at the PI.

Talk about transitional!
Your front panel says Fender Musical Instruments=post CBS.
Your back panel says Fender Electric Instruments=pre CBS.
Can you date it?

Unmolested AB165.
The circled resistors are usually the first targets for modding.

Mine also has the AB165 circuit with AA165 tube chart.
Both front and back plates are "FMI".

If I am reading the S/N correctly, its in the first quartile of Bassman's built in 1965. Interesting enough, my AA165 which has all 64' iron, had 64' original lytics and both F.M.I badges, has a higher S/N.

Leo Fender was thrifty with his inventory and apparently did not believe in stranding parts, no better example than the rare Tuxedo Bassman.

Hello all...

Dr. Eric - thanks again for getting this little gem back up and running. It actually belongs to pickup guru David Allen, and like all loaner gear, if it goes down on "my watch" I find some great hands to make things right!

This is a GREAT sounding amp. The Bass channel is savage on ten, and the Normal channel is very pretty. Great to see all the comments on this baby. Falling hard for this one!

Cheers ~ Doug

Thanks again Dr. Eric

No big deal of course, but it looks like Fender Electric to me--
