Monkeymatic Shasta Princeton Reverb pine combo

Post by xtian »

If you were building a Princeton combo from scratch, with the intention of using a 12" speaker, would you enlarge the cabinet dimensions, or leave it stock?

Make it a hair fatter (mo' bass) but leave the same overall height/width dimensions. Definitely a 12" speaker.

Sorry, no comprendo "fatter." Phatter? Do you mean depth? BTW, I think I'll buy a pre-punched chassis for this build.

I have seen it done a few ways - I think the proper way to do it is to modify the cleats so that the speaker can be as far to the side as possible.

the main thing you want to do is clear the output transformer - if its the stock transformer you should be fine but if you go oversize thats where things get tight

You can put 12 inch speaker in stock Princeton chassis many cabinet builders offer your choice 10" or 12".

When I build a custom amp chassis 50w into a Princeton cab using 12" I order the cab taller so OT clears the speaker. I have also installed the OT on the side rather in the stock middle chassis location this clears the speaker no problem.

Do you build a square box and then cut the front angle, or cut the angle before assembly?

I cut the slant using my table saw after it was glued together but that's me.

It's an undersized box. I don't know whether some of the aftermarket cabinets are bigger or not -- Allen, Newell, Mojo, et al.

Yes some of the other guys do list their cabs as being taller I believe.

Got some nice pine today.

Now trying to decide on a chassis. Mojotone or Weber are the only prepunched ones I've found. Any others? Also found blank chassis on eBay for $31.

What about the Allen Amps small chassis ("fits a 'PR' cabinet")?

I dovetailed and glued up my cabinet.

Wondering about the baffle, specifically the material, like Fender silver fabric, on the front of the baffle. Is the material just resting against the surface of the baffle? Or do you build a frame to suspend it?

I ask because I had an old Sano once where the material on the cabinet was actually rattling. The glue had dried out.
