Fender PS400 Power Transformer

Post by Nickyfullstack »

Hey yall I have a Fender PS400 with a blown power transformer (tested and confirmed). I’m seeking options I have here. The $700 mercury magnetics transformer being the worst option so far. I can’t seem to find anyone who will rewind it except for Mercury magnetics, which will be overpriced. If anyone has suggestions for a rewind I’m all ears but trying to keep this within a reasonable price range.

Do you guys know if Hammond, Heyboer or Edcor make a transformer that would work in the PS400? I’ve found some that were close but not quite what I need.

I don’t think having one custom built will be in the price range so I’d like to avoid that.

Figured I’d start his thread for the next guy who needs a PS400 without giving up a kidney.

Pacific transformers will wind something for a more reasonable price . Send them all the specs , and don’t make a typo .

+1 on Pacific. They're easy to work with as well and pricing isn't Mercury ridiculous.

There’s a ton of room on that chassis and if you’re not concerned with a spot on restoration then you might consider using two transformers, one supplying the V+ and the other for the filament supply.

On another note in regards to these amps, with all the design and development work that went into these amps and there use of 3 costly transformers it’s a crime that everything on the secondary side of the PT is not fused.

The last one of these I did a tube job on a few years ago I added 4 fuses .

Not worth the effort in trying that if you want my 2 cents worth!

While at times I have fixed opens like that I have never removed a short.

And the reason is simple .

Deep in near the core is where it gets the hottest and that’s where a break down of the enamel coating of a wire is most likely to take place, and you can’t get at those.
