Deluxe Reverb 'Wreck style normal channel

Post by Herzog »

I have had a desire to build a Deluxe Reverb for a long time now.

As I'm planning to do this as a scratch build I'm wondering if I can add another tube and mod the normal channel to have a Trainwreck style preamp (extra triode would be the cold clipper stage)

I'd ideally like to leave the vibrato channel alone for cleans

Any of you guys attempted something like this?

Would I need a beefier PT for the extra triode requirements?

Any adjustments to the LTP required?

I don't see why you couldn't add another triode, but you'd need to make sure the PT has enough current in the B+ and Heater windings to take on the added triode. You can do the math by adding up all tubes heater requirements and see what they add up to, and look at the PT you were going to use. The very slight mA of current on the B+ is likely fine unless they really barely rated the transformer for the current, but the heaters do pull a decent amount per tube. You might not need to adapt the PI, but it may come in too hot to the PI so that you'd need some kind of attenuation of the signal pre PI, but the only way to know for sure really would be to build it :D

Someone here may have already done something similar and could answer for sure.

Sounds like a fun project.
