Blues From Drew’s 5E3 Stuff I Done Bought

Post by MeanMrMustard »

This was a fun thing I ended up selling to a friend who now gigs weekly with it. His need was a reasonably loud clean amp. He’d borrowed my 5C3 combo build for a few gigs and loved it so I bought this stuff from Drew and did it up. My mom and I have been fooling with her old aniline dye powders on a Tele I put together last year. That one was red. We did another for my dad a few months back in this same blue.

Circuit isn’t a large departure from a traditional 5E3 but I made changes according to the desired result. Pretty simple, I wanted less gain and a tighter response. No more tube rect (cost saving and heat saving) and the Tweedle Dee style 1 filter cap per 12AX7. This is one hell of a quiet amp. The two boards instead of one are just because it’s what I had on hand. Had that Eminence lying around forever and it was perfect for it. Mercury trannies. CE Distribution chassis that is kinda lame but at least there’s a hole labeled Standby for my standby switch lol. The octal holes on this one weren’t big enough for the whole sockets to be flush mounted. The mounting wings are bent a tad. Lame but it works.

Anyway, I’m quite happy with the result. It’s just a very lush clean amp that will get dirty with my R8.

Nice looking build, inside and out! I have thought quiet a few times about getting one of those chassis.

Thanks. I’d buy another and know just what to expect.

It is dyed pine, and finished in Tung oil. Like 12 coats. Harder woods are easier. The ash for the Teles was awesome.
