Yeah, I spilled a bottle of water on mine last week.
Seemed fine until the next day and I was getting some weird sound loops.
One of the keys must have shorted out....
Now I have a new fancy schmancy M$ Natural Ergonomic Keyboard.

Hey, I'm sittin' here typing away and doing my corrections and all of a sudden it quits with the crazy stuff. 12321. Yea baby, self repairing electronics. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. Whoohoo!
Thanks for the help Structo. You got a magic touch.

Congrats on the speedy recovery! It's nice when you don't have to chuck one of these danged digital doohickys.
FWIW-I've had good results spraying silicone like holy water on sticky keys. I think it eventually displaces all the unscheduled fluids and the computer doesn't seem to reject the silicone environment.
YMMV of course.

Unplug it, hose it off in the kitchen sink, dry it off with a hair dryer. Leave it for 24 hours to make sure it's dry. After that it should be fine. If not, get a new one for $10. Heck, I got a wireless one with mouse for about $25, but you've got to look for a sale to get it that cheap.
Re: Ice tea spilled on keyboard
Yeah but where's the fun in that?
We always want new gear!
I got an excuse for the wifey to buy a fancy keyboard!
Honey this thing is shorted out, I need a new one!
This thing has a lot of bells and whistles.
Plus I've grown used to the split keyboard on the ergonomic one.
My wife has the tiny $10 board and I can't hardly type on that thing.
But, it is black, I wanted white.
In dim light I have trouble because I am a hunt and peck typer.
Sort of like when all the hi fi gear went to the all black scheme.
Then I bought a new Oppo DVD player and it is silver.......

Not recommended for a laptop.Phil_S wrote:Unplug it, hose it off in the kitchen sink, dry it off with a hair dryer. Leave it for 24 hours to make sure it's dry. After that it should be fine. Funny, the kind of advice given for computers vs. the insight shared when something has tubes in it.skyboltone wrote: Dasng!@ ASnd it'as as lasptop too!@ (translation, more than just the cost of a new keyboard)
Silicone spray on switches is not a good way to go either. There exist water-displacing contact cleaners that would do the job much better.
Regardless, I am relieved to see a happy ending to the saga.

Re: Ice tea spilled on keyboard
I stand my ground here. This is appropriate treatment for a plug-in keyboard for a regular computer with a $10 keyboard. No, it isn't something to do to a laptop. I never said that.Zippy wrote:Not recommended for a laptop.Phil_S wrote:Unplug it, hose it off in the kitchen sink, dry it off with a hair dryer. Leave it for 24 hours to make sure it's dry. Re: Ice tea spilled on keyboard
After my squadron returned from Iraq, all of our mission planning computers were totally trashed from the fine sand and dust. I was told that they just chucked the keyboards in the dishwasher and after a very good drying period they were good as new.
That might have been BS, but our tactics guys claimed that it worked.....

I've heard about putting keyboards in the dishwasher - you've gotta put em on the rack upside down.
I don't have a dishwasher, but I have "washed" a keyboard by holding it upside down and attacking it with a nylon brush with lots of soapy water.
Dunno if I'd try it with a laptop, though - unless it wasn't mine

Re: Ice tea spilled on keyboard
Yeah I thought it was weird that my keyboard shorted out just from spilling water on it.
It worked fine right after I did it.
I just flipped it over and dumped the water out.
It was the next day before it went haywire.
I didn't try to dry it out more I just went and bought a new one.
I can't use those tiny little $10 boards anymore because I got used to the Micro$oft natural style board.
Maybe because I have short stubby fingers, I always end up hitting two keys at a time on the small ones.
