Jefferson for President

Post by Firestorm »

I looked it up. There's no Constitutional requirement that a Presidential candidate be alive at the time of his or her election. I guess if a deceased candidate were elected, the rules of succession would prevail. So Jefferson for President. You can pick own VP. Tom was a libertarian, he liked black people, he liked French wine. He took care of his children as best he could for a bankrupt plantatation owner. Ask the Hemmings family.

I was watching the debate and got depressed. There's nobody running on either side I would want my grandchildren to read about .

It matters very little who actually resides in the Whitehouse as long as big business controls the government...

In the early days politics was not a career. It was a public service. One did not base there political positions on campaign contributions. When the Rockefellers and Morgan's and Carnegies etc got too powerful, public outcry forced congress to impose anti monopoly legislation and broke up the giant trusts. Big business controls government and makes laws that keep the power at the top and the masses way down and poor while the tea baggers call for less government regulation keeping the rich in control.

Eliminate the system of lobbyists, super packs, campaign contributions. Take the money out of politics is the only way to fix it.

Sorry for tirade. I bet there is some sort rule against talking politics on this forum. If I have offended anyone I do apologize, but we should all be angry and motivated to force change--what ever direction you lean towards. Apathy and disillusionment of the political process is the real enemy that keeps the powers that be the powers that be.

Very nicely said, brother. And there IS a candidate who echoes this sentiment!

Yes, but is there one that will actually try and succeed? Rhetorical question, of course.

I think it's OK as long as it's non-partisan (which this thread seems to be.) Once you start discussing specific candidates, all hell breaks loose and the forum ends up in the crapper, lickety-split. Let's be mindful there can be adverse consequences. I'd rather not see a good thing head south. Thank you for indulging my public service announcement. "I approved this ad."

The strong eat the weak. That was what led to the Revolution. The founders wanted a government that could not tax the people. That's gone. They wanted a government so poor it could not commit to war without calling up state militias. That's gone. They wanted a Court so powerless it couldn't make up its own law. That's gone.

Nowadays, if you go to work as aide to a Congressman, they give you a car. If you are a Congressman and manage to serve three terms, you get a pension. If you get elected Senator, you're set for life. Back in the days when Senators were appointed by the states, there were impassioned letters written to state legislatures saying "Please, oh please don't make me go back to the Senate! I have a business/farm/law practice to run. I can't afford to do anymore politics."

That's how you fix it: make public service so unpleasant that only people with extraordinary character will do it. And then, only briefly.

Islam is a lovely peace-centric religion. Christianity is a lovely peace-centric religion. Both have done abhorrent things. Think of the Crusades and the Inquisition. Ask the the Sikhs how they feel about Muslims.
